This year's snow pack above Lake Powell is estimated esti-mated to be about 147 percent of normal according to the National Weather Service. March inflow into Lake Powell increased to 173 percent of normal nor-mal and April through July is estimated to be 11 million acre feet or 142 percent of normal. The lake should reach its highest levels the first of July and start tapering off in October and November. The last time Lake Powell reached full pool was in 1986. though it came close two years ago in 1995. The bays will be bigger and boaters can venture further into many of Lake Powell's 96 major canyons. The increased water level may also open up more shortcuts between canyons and fishing should be better. In the past years when the water was low, brush and small plants grew near the shoreline. Those areas are now covered with water, providing fish, especially espe-cially the threadfin shad, a major staple of Powell's game fish, more protection to live and lay eggs. Fishermen should experience one of the best smallmouth, largemouth and striper seasons in 20 years, according to Wayne Gustaveson, fisheries biologist for Utah Wildlife Resources. Even if you do not own a boat, there are many activities to enjoy. Families can take a guided tour on one of eight Lake Powell tour boats including includ-ing the 150-passenger Desert Shadow, offering the ultimate in touring comfort. Power boats and three classes of houseboats are available to rent. New this year, weekly park entrance fees are now $5 per vehicle and an annual pass is available for $15. To make reservations or for more information, call 1-800-528-6154 or visit Lake Powell's new website at www. visit lake-powell.com.
