Show B-5 The Park Record Saturday, March 29, 1997 Jeremy Continued from B-1 public. Even the town's big supermarket supermar-ket sat discretely off to the side, buffered by alpine landscaping, subtly-signed, uncluttered, we'll merchandised. Inside the store ripe displays of hearts of palm salad, imported gorgonola. certified angus beef, free-range chickens, prosciutto di parma supported Jeremy's belief that rustic and natural nat-ural needn't mean acetic. Park City's most pressing problems? ( l ) Parking; (2) liquor stores closed on Sundays, holidays and elections; (3) deciding which combination of ski passes and locals' coupons to buy for the upcoming season; (4) getting stuck in traffic with a bunch of lousy-driving, pasty-faced Angelenos during Sundance. Not enough worries to make a David Letternian Top 10 list. Jeremy, like most others he knew in town, preemptively pre-emptively eschewed any suggestions sugges-tions that the Park City lifestyle did not reflect the "real world" by avoiding socializing or otherwise dealing with urban apologists. Probably for these reasons as much as anything. Jeremy developed devel-oped his own Western aesthetic, which in turn lead to his building the multi-angled "mountain contemporary" con-temporary" he called home in the mountainous and prestigious neighborhood dubbed American Flag. An appropriately named place. Jeremy often thought. Almost as if the developer were some kind of Everest expedition leader, planting the flag alter surviving sur-viving the struggle to the pinnacle of the American Dream. Jeremy could sit comfortably in his living room and actually feel part of the outdoors, where glass walls opened the rooms to meadows mead-ows and ski resorts, the lights of Old Town and (only in the last few years) a burgeoning number of other mountain contemporaries. Jeremy particularly loved the way the living room window flamed Jupiter Peak like a postcard. He knew all along he would hang the new painting adjacent to that window. win-dow. About two weeks later. Steffi got up early, knowing it was a powder pow-der morning and anxious to hit the backeountry. She stretched herself awake and then awakened Jeremy in her usual manner, straddling him and kissing his face and licking his ripples and armpits. An amazingly athletic girl. Steffi had legs like a Appraisafc Real Estate Appraisal Services 649-1100 ( 'oiiudcivi.iI I .mil ( 'oinlninimiims Homes William J. It was because of this resemblance that Jeremy had named the two-year-old German shorthair after Steffi Graff. And Steffi was right, as usual. Jeremy thought. Friday morning dawned a picture-perfect bluebird day. A foot of ninety-three percent pow-pow had fallen overnight, not too much wind, on top of a generous gener-ous early-season snowpack. Jeremy filled his small thermos with steaming steam-ing espresso, packed the gear into the snowmobile and thev were off. Jeremy's little stub of a gray-blonde gray-blonde pony tail flew straight back out of a hole he'd cut for himself in his fleece sherpa hat as he scanned his surroundings, back and forth, back and forth, but varying the pattern pat-tern like a Secret Service agent. Buzzing loudly up Guardsman's, his mind drilled to the big news from the day before, about the discovery dis-covery of ice fields on the south pole of the moon. The Pentagon guy had called it the most valuable piece ol real estate in the solar system. sys-tem. Yeah. Jeremy could see it. A lunar half-pipe. The ultimate snow-hoard snow-hoard park, where maybe if you'd get enough air you'd be sent into orbit and die a cold, scary, exhilarating exhila-rating death. Thinking about this, he cranked the throttle and sped urgently up the trail, more anxious than ever to push some powder. Sipping some espresso at the top of the hike up the ridge. Jeremy marveled at the chiseled precision of the view down the other side of I0.42()-loot peak into Big Cottonwood Canyon while Steffi sniffed and sampled the powder. pow-der. Jeremv stomped a traverse into the unbroken snow near the summit. Steffi obediently following in his track. When they reached the line of trees to skiers' right. Jeremy started down the slope, following fol-lowing the tree line, pumping 13 consecutive fall line turns before pausing to catch his breath behind a formidable stand of fat ti unked quakies. Steffi effortlessly plunged down the rest of the slope, powder plumes exploding around her. Wagging not only her tail but her whole hind quarter, she looked up at Jeremy from where the steep bowl leveled into a thinly gladed meadow. Jeremy kick-turned back to the slope and gesticulated into his first turn when he heard it. That creaking creak-ing sound, like an unlubricated truck chassis. Jeremy pondered for a moment that there weren't any Professional Services Valley Mental Health 649-8347 Mental Health. But this wave was made of cement and it bashed Jeremy like a baseball bat, as he tried to do as he was taught, swimming to the surface, kicking at the heels of his boots trying to release his bindings and flee himself of the skis that could drown him. And then it stopped. Jeremv was propped relatively upright, encased to the waist with petrified snow, one hand raised in the air like an eager elementary student. A grinning Steffi galloped toward him and pounced on his face, practically prac-tically slobbering him to death. About 20 minutes later, a couple cou-ple of palrollers from Deer Valley responded to his cell phoned SOS to the bartender at the Stein's. An embarrassed Jeremy of course recognized rec-ognized them. Heidi said: "I don't believe you. Jer. What's the point of this transceiver if you're skiing alone? I mean you might as well gel one for Steffi too. since she seems to be the only one you hang out with." Randy said: "Shit dude! You're getting a little lit-tle too enthusiastic about this return to nature backeountry stuff, doneha think?" Jeremv said: "Just dig me the hell out of here, will you guys? My knee's killing me and Eve gotta take a huge leak!" After two weeks of therapy following fol-lowing arthroscopic surgery on his torn ACL. Jeremy found himself, left leg propped up nice and cozy on the leather ottoman, warmed by a crackling fire from his floor-to-ceiling flagstone fireplace. It was a fabulous sap-and-smoke-smelling cold mountain evening with a full moon spotlighting Jupiter Peak. The lights of Old Town burning like a fire below. Jeremy sipped a glass of Oregon Pinot Noir. thinking think-ing this is what life is all about, his attention wandering from his painting paint-ing to his view. l.tmni Kerl flcil the urine splashed streets of Sim Francisco four veins ago for the idyllic Utah lifestyle.
