Show Wednesday, February 5, 1997 The Park Record B-3 Figure skater gets 2nd in Utah Games by Dave Fields OF THE RECORD STAFF Training 10-12 hours a week is starting to pay off for 11-year-old figure skater Codie Larsen. For the last year Larsen has dedicated ded-icated not just winter months to skating but now that she has set her sights on the 2002 Winter Olympics, the McPolin Elementary fifth-grader skates year round. "I have two dreams," Larsen said, "one is to get an Olympic-size Olympic-size ice rink in Park City and the second is to be in the Olympics." And last month Larsen earned a silver medal in her first Utah Winter Games appearance. However, the beaming youngster is no stranger to performance. In her three years on the ice, she has performed for two years at the Park City Ski Area ice rink and since she started competing in July, she has racked up a 1st, 2nd and 5th-place finish. She keeps all of her medals and trophies in her room but the silver medal from the Winter Games goes on the mantle above the fireplace, except when dad. Dann, is showing it off at work along with the videotape of her performance. Larsen said she was nervous before the competition but relaxed when she got on the ice, partly because "ice is my god," she says. "I pretended like no one else Dogs and mushers race Continued from B-1 By the time the last of the 20 mushers gets out of the starting area, the first team to finish is rounding the corner, dogs frothing froth-ing and musher sweating. Some teams pass and others get passed along the six-mile course. As with any sport, equipment fails and so do animals. The dogsleds themselves weigh about twenty pounds and must have a 'dog basket' bas-ket' in case one of the dogs is FIRST WESTERN MORTGAGE (801) 649-9556 Invest In Park City Trust Deeds 12 Return Vicky L. Since the competition Larsen has moved up to the 'freestyle-five' 'freestyle-five' category where she will perform per-form more difficult maneuvers like spiral-sit-scratch-spin and split-jumps. When Larsen is not skating, writing stories, playing the piano, playing with her dog, frog, or bird, she makes a great lobbyist. lobby-ist. Many young figure skaters drive or are driven by parents to Salt Lake (either the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center or the Bountiful Ice rink) to practice. Parents and skaters alike would like to see Park City dedicate some land and money to build a facilty. They have also been joined by the recently-formed recently-formed Curling Association of Utah which was formed by Park City locals. Although Larsen is grateful to her mother, Tina, who drives her to Salt Lake four times a week for practice, she is not shy about wanting a rink closer to home. "I'd do anything to beg the mayor to get an Olympic-size rink," Larsen pleads. Until then, mom and daughter will be making the trip to Salt Lake for practice because the young figure skater is determined deter-mined to compete in the 2002 Olympics, the same year she turns 16 and is old enough to drive herself to Salt Lake. injured along the course. The handmade wood sleds that cost $800 after shipping, also have a brush bow that keeps brush from hitting the musher. In case a musher needs to slow down, he or she can use a brake that has two prongs that dig into the snow when stepped on. Sleds also have a 'snow hook', similar to an boat anchor except they are for digging dig-ging into the ice or snow. Mushers can steer the sled somewhat some-what by edging with the runners Our $295 Pckg- On Complete Installed Doors WON'T WARP, CRACK OR PEEL TOUGH & DURABLE 15.5-R FACTOR SALE EXTENDED THRU FEB. 28 ifflPDQQL R FACTOR MODEL 575 Eleven-year-old Codie Larsen Utah Winter Games last month Park City ice rink and a place in which they stand on, similar to edging a ski. Some well-trained dogs respond to the commands "Gee" and "Haw", right and left, which are old horse training words that some mushers use on the course to guide their dogs.
