With visions fixed, and muscles ripped, I guide myself along the way. With rations gone, and comprehending wrong. Clarity is the key, for the survival of me. I paddle into the current. Where I find my own nourishment, The rocks and trees, Are all that I need. Too hard for me to explain. For words, they do not feel pain. I am an empty soul. Engulfed by other people's goals. Can I continue to do what I love, And keep my dreams, and soar above, Will life take me by the heels? Or will I prevail, to free my seals. Does it matter what do. In a world that has no clue. If I keep my mind to what I want, How could I keep from growing up? TO BE A FRIEND by Aja Sheredy 12th grade She cries. I listen She hurts, I know the pain She loves I know she's confused I try to understand She needs a friend She needs someone to trust I am that someone She loved him I know she still does THRESHOLD by Nick Scoun 12th grade The threshold of time has no limit But to those who try to watch it. For watching time is as futile as watching shadows dance in the dark. The threshold of heaven has no length Except to those who try to measure its greatness and beauty, and find the disgust and horror in themselves. The threshold of love can only be seen and felt by those who use it and break it. For love cannot be used, it can only be held inside one's heart The threshold of life is always continuing until you die... For when the threshold of man dies and your own threshold is beaten, All thresholds have no meaning, except those of nothingness and darkness, Those which you can never escape. UNTITLED by Laura Haycock 12th grade Who am I In this world of pain Trying to gain favor To stop the rain Who are you In this world of shame Stealing from your brother To keep up with the game Contributions from ParkCity Here is a story by a fifth grade student stu-dent in Teri Wiss' class at Jeremy Ranch Elementary. FLARE by Micah Goddard I was about two or three when it happened. Up above our telephone, there was a little built-in storage space. If I opened the cupboard and put my one foot inside and then the other, then pushed myself up with my hands, I could just reach the little storage space. I peered up into the little storage space. Seeing a box of flares, I reached for it and clenched it between my little baby-like fingers. I pulled the box toward me and I opened it. Reaching in, I gently pulled out a flare. Slowly I took off the cap. I pressed the cap against the flare and struck it like I was striking a match. It didn't start. I struck it again, this time it started start-ed like a fire-breathing dragon, turning a red-blooded man into a black pile of ashes. My hand was screaming so I dropped the cap. The sound was like that of a penny falling into an empty piggy bank. I felt throbbing pain rush to my hand like soldiers charging to war. My dad put out the flare by sticking it into a pan of cold water. I could hear the flare hissing in the water like a snake warning its prey. My mom quickly quick-ly filled a pan full of cold water for my hand. The cold water hurt. It felt like my face would feel if I had just slid down an icy hill on my face. After most of the pain was gone, my mom and I wrapped my hand in bandages. After that, my hand was speckled with little blisters. I learned a lesson that day never light a flare. From that day forth, I have not touched another flare again! The following compositions were written by Betsy Bacon's fifth graders at Jeremy Ranch Elementary. SPELLING by Melanie Werner Spelling, Who needs it? It just wastes time. It is just a bunch of letters in a line! I before E except after C. Who cares? It never works for me! All the toos. All the heres. It definitely ruins my ears. The A's and O's The U's and the E's And all those spelling bees. How do you spell "to?" Which one? Is it T O or T O O? I give up, I simply don't know! Is it E-A or E-E? It simply doesn't matter to me! Spelling. I hate it. Who needs it? I definitely don't. I never will, I always won't! SCHOOL MONSTER by Mike Woodward I snuck down my stairs. Out of nowhere a monster popped out! The monster had a wormy-like face. It had two gigantic bloodshot egg-like eyes. It looked majorly stressed out. It had no nose what-so-ever. I turned and ran to the door but I stopped halfway and turned around. The monster was not there anymore. Mama was so mad, because Christmas was coming." For the rest of the day, Sara and Mary-Kate's parents were laughing and smiling. HOMEWORK by Graham Daugherty Why was homework invented? WINTER by Melanie Werner The crisp ice glistens in the night It is such a pretty sight. The evergreens are covered with snow. The green branches are hanging low. The snowflakes fly from the sky Upon the world below. That beautiful white snow. Pull on your boots and your gloves. Then look up high and see the doves. Cold icicles hang down below. Almost touching the clear white snow. The ice and snow are very bright, They look like big white lights. Shining bright. The ice glistens. And if you listen. You can hear them tinkling softly. Winter is such a beautiful season, If you read this poem then you will know the reason. The snow and ice, Oh, it feels so nice To have winter every year!
