Unfortunately, after the holidays someconsumers find themselves in financial trouble as a result, unable to pay bills that have been accrued as the result of a compulsive moment. "People will go overboard often because they care about' somebody," said Dan Smith, president of the Utah Institute of Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) and a CFP for Zions Investment Securities in Park City. As a former financial counselor and a current CFP, Smith has had an opportunity to see and document the financial errors people tend to make during the holiday season. Obviously, the most common mistake is spending beyond one's means. As an organization, Smith and other CFPs try to keep people from making what, to some, could be a very costly mistake. "It's pretty common that people will spend money to show someone they love them," said Smith. "What we try to do as a CFP group is increase the knowledge of financial planning." According to the Institute of Certified Financial Planners( consumers can avoid waking up from the holidays with a "financial hangover" by following a few simple tips: Budget;, probably the most obvious and simplistic way of avoiding debt, setting up a budget makes the consumer aware of exactly how much is available to spend- Smith referred to it as looking at the long term, and added that "there are different types of budgeting. Some work for some people and some work for others." Every individual is free to choose the type of budget that fits them, but the important thing is simply to have one and stick closely to it. Start Planning Early; CFPs recommend window shopping, catalog shopping and browsing to get early ideas and find the best deals. Also, gift certificates to movies, restaurants museums help keep a budget in line with expenses. Be Creative; Consider baked goods and homemade items as an acceptable alternative to expensive store-bought gifts. They are usually cheaper and many people consider a hand-made gift more of a treat than something purchased. Charitable Gifts; Children can be given a lesson in helping others by cooking dinner or providing Christmas for someone less fortunate. Make a shopping list; This falls in line with making a budget. Make a list of everyone you want to buy for, what you wanrto buy them and what the. items will cost. Then, using your budget, do the math and see if there is enough money. Consumers may have to consider dropping some people from the list or buying cheaper items to stay within a budget. ' Sacrifice; Consider waiting until after the holidays to exchange gifts with a spouse, or substitute a quiet dinner alone for a" gift. Concentrate on close relatives or children instead. , Talk to your kids; Discuss gift ideas and how much money is available to spend. If cutbacks are necessary, let the kids. know. Stick to the list; Try not to deviate from the compiled list. This will help avoid "impulse buying and the need to outdo someone else. Spend Cash; Avoid using credit cards or getting a loan. According to the Wall Street Journal, consumer debt already stands at 17 percent of personal disposable income, up from 15.9 a year ago. Many CFPs feel personal debt should not be higher than 10 percent. Other tips the Institute suggest are keeping track of spending, bargain shopping, not shopping at the last minute when stress can blow a planned budget, and saving during the year for the holidays. To many, these simple tips will sound basic and obvious, but many may find them helpful in learning some useful money management skills.
