Adequate teacher salaries equals quality educators Continued from Page C6 dering states and ninth among the cloven western states in average teacher salaries. For Park City teachers teach-ers the problem is exacerbated. The cost of living in our beautiful community commu-nity far exceeds that of the rest of Utah and most of the western United States. Indeed, housing costs have risen to such dramatic heights that new teachers who rely solely upon their salaries for income (the salary of a beginning teacher in Park City is $22,393) can no longer afford to purchase pur-chase a home and to live in the very community where their students live and play. For many years the state legislators legisla-tors claimed that there were simply insufficient funds to pay teachers a higher salary. Well, this is no longer the case. According to recent budget projections, the state expects a surplus of $72,000,000 for 1994. While this figure is higher than in the past, it is not unusual. The state has run significant signifi-cant surpluses for the last eleven years in a row. Despite the small amount we pay our teachers, state lawmakers decided to provide a small tax rebate last year instead of applying those funds to increasing teacher salaries. Apparently, this philosophy continues as the current group of legislators debate how best to refund the money instead of looking to rectify a long standing problem. State and private funds are critical if salaries for Utah teachers, including Park City's, are to rise significantly. Because of equalization and other limiting factors, the Park City School District cannot, by itself, resolve this problem. But one thing is certain, as the district's veteran teachers retire or move elsewhere and the number of applicants for teaching positions in Park City declines to a critical point, the quality of education in our community will also decline. In summary, sum-mary, teacher salaries (and the salaries of supports personnel and administrators) can affect the quality of education our children receive. As a result, just as we must strive to improve every other aspect of education educa-tion which affects achievement wp must also strive to assure that our teacher salaries are adequate enough to attract a steady stream of qualitV applicants as well as to retain our veteran vet-eran teachers.
