The Welcome Back event consisted of a 9-kilometer classical technique race (lower distances for the youngest " Competitors) and drew a large crowd of skiers. Not surprisingly, the University of Utah's intercollegiate team won going away, but due to it being the first race of the year, no one seemed too interested in just who won. For those who are interested in such matters, the top-three finishers in each category are listed below. White Pine Touring will get its racing season underway this weekend, Saturday, Dec. 3, with a relay featuring 'l?6th classical and a skating technique, at. Luke Smith got Brackmans on the board when he scored on a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle with 2:44 left in the first period. But 20 seconds later, goalie Larsen' s bad luck continued when the puck bounced off the goal light behind the net and deflected to a Spa player all alone in the slot. The goal put Spa ahead 3-1 after one period of play. The second period saw Brackmans score three times. Bruce Goodman gave Brackmans a two-goal lead just over three minutes into the final period on a slap shot from the point that deflected off a Spa player. Larsen, having shaken off the first period, shut the Spa out for the second straight period to keep Brackmans in control. Goodman scored again when he hit the open net with five seconds left to give Brackmans the 6-3 margin. SMALL BUSINESS IBM 649-8542 in park city U.S. skiers get win, top-10s in Vail races continued from CI Switzerland's Heidi Zeller-Baehler, Zeller-Baehler, who made it two-for-two in giant slaloms this year after winning the America's Opening GS a week earlier. Zeller-Baehler's win in Park City was her first-ever World Cup win. She also managed to take third in Saturday's super G. Vreni Schneider, the big winner at America's Opening, continued her strong early-season run with a second in the GS. The. men's World Cup tour, battling poor snow conditions in Europe, finally got in a race: A GS on the glacier above Tignes, France. The men's team opened in much the same fashion as the women a week earlier. In a weekend of racing, only two Americans made a second run. Of the two, only won finished to score points. That American was Park City's Jeremy Nobis, who took 13th on Saturday, Dec. 3 in a race won by Liechtenstein's Achim Vogt. Chris Puckett was the only other U.S. skier to qualify for the second run, but he DNFed during that second run. In Sunday's slalom, won by Alberto Tomba by more than a second, no U.S. skiers qualified for the second run. In related news, the International Ski Federation (FIS) Sunday formally turned down U.S. offers to hold World Cup races in America, including an offer for races here in Park City. Men's downhill races have already been cancelled in Val d'Isere and Val Gardena, as is the case with the GS in Alta Badia. The men's tour will return to Tignes this weekend for a super G and a GS, but the prospect of any December downhills is highly unlikely. IN TOUCH WITH HEALTH In this age of high technology, it is important to note that the human touch plays an important role in promoting health. The effect was first brought to the public's attention at the turn of the century in a dramatic way when it was noted that babies in orphanages and hospitals who were not held failed to grow. More recently, in the 1980's, researchers found that premature babies who were massaged for three 15-minute 15-minute periods daily gained 47 percent more weight daily than those who were not stimulated. Research shows that people of all ages respond to touch with more regular heartbeats, lowered blood pressure, and a more positive attitude. Physical therapists promote the healthful benefits of touch by physically interacting with their patients in a caring and nurturing manner. iranio neemm cqiiai mommy (taymanM (tumpurM by (HvWtng t puKhta ptica mrKr u hy Kta nomttw of btftng cyctt In the dewytwl (wudt w raond but no Nnwica chatga "On ifkcwnvMl rgiilivoMftQ Radw (tfitch VMutFlut Wm attqnhaj penod N any apaoX! moMt, (NtymarM not Mda vmaty ituimq iht djaiagnaMc) raw tod. fha unpaid tMtonct en the SpariM fiircltal "rogiam nH M addad to ygu Regulai udMM bManra Hm nam hmg cvt Dapandino on youi MMa and'01 hjtfaia) an naiwa Lhatoj m up m 1k AN NUM.
