But for individuals battling alcohol dependency and depression, it can be the most stressful time of the year. "As a society, we send mixed messages," says Laila Sperling, RN, head nurse of IHC Dayspring Chemical Dependency Program, "on one hand we say, 'just say no.' On the other had, we say, 'go.go.go.' The holidays can be very tough for someone battling alcohol dependency because society expects and encourages them to drink, more so than at any time of the year." "Someone who has a drinking problem can drink much more publicly now than during the rest of the year because excessive drinking during the holiday season does not seem out of the ordinary," she adds. For recovering alcoholics, Sperling suggests they first ask if alcohol will be served at an event before agreeing to attend. If they do attend a function where alcohol is served, she recommends they distance themselves from the bar and, perhaps, for others who are drinking. "If you f&el uncomfortable going to an event on New Year's Eve where alcohol will be flowing, don't go," she says. "Don't put yourself at risk. Go to another function where alcohol won't be served- If you, a family member, or friend does have a drinking problem, seek "felp. It is a real disease influenced by both genetic and biological components. Individuals who are battling alcohol dependency need support and help from friends and family. The test time to start is now, especially during the holidays. MEXICAN & AMERICAN FOOD Opening January H 1992 Come in and get a taste of real Mexican food! And more!
