Christensen Dept. of Family & Human Development Utah State University Marriage is one of the most important commitments you will make in life. It should consume more time and effort than any other undertaking. Therefore, it takes an enormous amount of dedication, understanding and changing. Marriage is a "WE" process; it cannot survive as an "I" process. Marriage takes service and maintenance to keep it working. There is a lot of information available for improving or enriching relationships. The following are some of the recommendations made by specialists in the field of marriage enrichment. If as a couple you will take these ideas seriously and implement them into your relationship, your marriage will improve. In the next couple of weeks, take a few minutes and talk with your spouse about how you feel and what the changes have meant to you. 1. Think of your spouse with positive thoughts. Later that day share those positive thoughts with your spouse. Use emotion and intimacy in your conversation. " 2. Be empathetic .and 1 understanding 'f " your' spouse's feelings. Your understanding and verbal concern may help your spouse deal with emotions better. Cry and laugh together. 3. Encourage your spouse each day. Over the past five years, 15 people have died over the New Year holiday. The holiday officially begins at 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31 and ends midnight Jan. 3. As you drive exercise patience, driver courtesy and common sense. Literally thousands of Utahns will be on the roads to visit friends and relatives, the Utah Safety Council reminds you to drive defensively. Robert Parenti, Utah Safety Council President, reminds you to: Allow plenty of following distance, and drive at reduced speed if road and weather conditions are poor. It is better to arrive late than not at all. Clear the windows of ice, snow and steam before you start your trip. You need to see clearly when you are driving-clearing just a peep hole is not enough. Fasten your safety belts. State law requires that both driver and front seat passengers use safety belts. Children under two must be in an approved car safety seat, and children under eight must be restrained in a safety belt. Be alert for drivers who have had too much to drink. Alcohol-impaired Alcohol-impaired drivers drive at inconsistent speeds, change lanes frequently, disregard traffic signs, and drive outside of lane markers. Do not let friends drink and drive. You should convince them to stay overnight, to ride with someone else, or you should call a taxi for them. Be aware of changing road and weather conditions and drive accordingly. For highway conditions con-ditions call 964-6000. Keep your vehicle in good working order. By making these safety precautions pre-cautions habit, you can help ensure that you and your family will have a safe and happy new year.
