The group evidently had pleased the snow god, since the sun gave way to clouds and snow almost instantly upon our arrival at Solitude's summit. sum-mit. We stepped out Solitude's "back door," and slowly traversed across the Highway to Heaven to Alta. This traverse perhaps the most difficult dif-ficult part of the trip crosses a huge, avalanche-prone snowfield, and overlooks the exquisite back-country back-country terrain of Wolverine Cirque. The Highway to Heaven brought us to Twin Lakes Pass, from which point we skied down into Grizzly Gulch, all the way to Alta. The snow in Grizzly Gulch was still soft in places, giving skiers in the group a chance to ski powder. (The powder was a worthy opponent, but the skiers, like Odysseus, survived.) The pace picked up then. We rode up the Wildcat Chair at Alta, skied through the Westward Ho area, then traversed down the canyon to Snowbird. This traverse involved some bush-whacking, but didn't take long. By this time we were all tired. One skier fell behind the group several times. Each time, while the group waited in a clearing, he flew out of the brush and crashed nearby in the snow. When we crossed the area boundry into Snowbird, I was sure the journey had finally ended. But an end to the Odyssey still eluded us Keller, the guide, informed in-formed us that we had just enough time to catch the last tram. Of course, each of us had the option of skipping the ride to the top of Snowbird. But like Odysseus, who never complains, we piled into the tram car. Eight minutes later we were at the top of Snowbird five miles by crow's flight from our starting point in Park City. Fifty miles by car, plus a tram ride. At Snowbird's summit the wind was howling, and the snow fell like thick white ash. Half-blinded, exhausted, ex-hausted, we made our way down Chip's Run, back to Snowbird's base. Finally, the trip was over. The seven hours gone by seemed more like 100 years. In that time span, the gates to the backcountry had been opened. And, like so many foreign islands, each mountain left memories. The eight skiers, comrades now, crawled in the van for the long, lazy ride back home. Five-area and four-area interconnect intercon-nect tours are available through Ski Utah. The five-area tour costs $95. To make reservations call Ski Utah at 1-534-1907.
