Show Page B2 Thursday, August 31, 1989 Park Record Lost i n trees by Alex Wells 7, v-v; Alamo patrons to inherit town My name's Alex Wells. I'm the new sportswritt here. I have no experience as a sportswriter, nor as a journalist. The Park Record hired me anyway and gave me a desk. I always thought that people with desks were smarter. I know now that this isn't true. What is true is that people who drink coffee think very, very fast. I think about sports. ..very, very fast. Unfortunately Unfor-tunately I type very slowly. Most of my thoughts are lost before I can type them; the rest are deleted by the editor. What's left is this column, which (unlike myself) will run every week. Park City is a great place to be a sportswriter. I've never been anywhere where so many people played sports. More people wear stretch pants than blue jeans in this town. (To live in the fast lane here, you have to be aerodynamic.) Almost everyone excercises somehow. We forget what it's like in other places, where "sports participation" means drinking beer and yelling, where a jogger is known as "the guy who runs", where bumps are things in the road. I was riding a train once when we passed by a jogger. There were two ladies from Chicago sitting sit-ting next to me. One asked, "Do you see that man running?" The other one said, "yeah." Then she asked, "What's wrong with him, anyway?" I thought then of all the joggers and cyclists in Park City, and asked myself, "What's wrong with them, anyway?" Today in Park City, a grown man was trying to ride a bike uphill through a field of rocks. Four ladies in lycra skiied by on the road. (They wore something with wheels on their feet.) Two joggers, jog-gers, already looking like death, passed by on their way up the mine road. What's wrong with them, anyway? One of my friends used to say, "You only got so many heartbeats, it doesn't make sense to waste them excercising." Sometimes when I'm pedalling my bike up Daly Canyon, I wonder if my friend might have been right. I listen to my heart pounding and try to calculate years lost. I think back to towns where no one ever ran, and wonder if it was because all the joggers had died. I wonder if our days are numbered, if all the joggers and cyclists are about to keel over. "Who," I ask aloud, "will be left?" I picture the noontime patrons of the Alamo, sitting sit-ting idly over beers at the bar. These, I say, are the men who shall inherit our town. Alex Wells is a 1986 graduate of Amherst College. Col-lege. He spent the last three years digging ditches and cleaning toilets. Now he has a desk, a telephone, and a chair that swivels. i ! But if you're looking for a consistent, competitive com-petitive race series, the time trials are for you. Just three dollars buys a lap around the 5.8 mile course on Richardson Flats (near the old city dump), and if that's not far enough the second lap is free. The races start every Monday night promptly pro-mptly at 6:30. (There will be no time trials on Labor Day.) After each race White Pine supplies refreshments, and holds drawings for prizes. Jeff Murray of Park City won both the men's one- and two-lap time trials Monday night. Murray, Mur-ray, who holds both course records for men, likes to use the time trials for training. "It's challenging as far as the physical aspect, due to the rolling roll-ing nature of the course," Murray Mur-ray said. "It's good interval training." Murray will compete in the national championships next month in Mammoth, CA. After the nationals, he hopes to put his White Pine records "out of reach." Cyndi Schwandt, who owns both the course records for women, won the women's one-and one-and two-lap races last Monday. Schwandt said the course is "pretty easy." Asked what changes she'd like to see in the series, Schwandt said, "More women should be here." Like Murray, she plans to compete in the national championships next month in California. Of course, not everyone in the time trials will race in the nationals. Joe Food of Park City Ci-ty races for fun. Food "trains extensively with beer and pasta." He agreed with Schwandt that there were "not enough girls." The course threw a surprise at Joe on Monday. Mon-day. "There was a truck going the wrong way in the course today... to-day... a four wheeler with a family in it," he said. jbi ibc IBI JL t3 A.
