Show Page C2 Thursday, November 23, 1988 Park Record Comedy and pathos create "Punchline" rt Lata, i itf' 1 ' i By RON GEORG Record staff writer Pathos and comedy may seem like opposite ends of the emotional spectrum, spec-trum, but they are actually quite closely linked. Most of us would find the chicken crossing the road much more amusing if he had to dodge some traffic on the way. Picture that little chicken, his little lit-tle chicken legs scrambling frantically fran-tically to avoid certain death from one of the roaring metal monsters threatening his existence, and you see the root of comedy unless he gets squashed. It is the fine line, managing to stare adversity in the face and still not get squashed, that makes for a comic's best material. The film "Punchline," starring Tom Hanks and Sally Field, is an accurate ac-curate portrayal of the comic's motivation; that is, the release these people get through turning their pathos inside out. Tom Hanks and Sally Field play Steven Gold and Lilah Krytsick, a pair of comedians from widely divergent backgrounds. The film examines ex-amines their lives and how their lives produce comedy. Gold is a washout medical student. Imagination running wild, he sees absurdity in cadavers. That makes for a lousy medical student, but he uses the experience to create some great comic material. Krytsick is a New Jersey housewife who's always been able to make people laugh. At dinner parties par-ties she's always had friends in stitches, stit-ches, and she's trying to reach a larger audience. Gold becomes Krytsick's mentor. She fails to see the humor in being a New Jersey mother of three married to a Polish insurance salesman. In seeking an outlet from her mundane life, she tries taking the stage to tell jokes. Unfortunately, by using pat jokes, she's abandoned the spontenaity which had her friends breaking up. Gold, on the other hand, is allowing allow-ing his cynicism to turn him into a manic depressive. Everything he sees has a punchline, and it begins weighing too heavily on him. As Krytsick gains confidance, through Gold's prodding, he begins to gain stability through her more grounded attitudes of home and family. The film maintains a structural in-tergrity in-tergrity throughout which builds three-dimenstional characters. Most of the hardship we see the characters going through is beautifully balanced by their release on the stage. The film is mostly set in "The Gas Station," a comedy club for aspiring comics.
