FN- as & - t photos by Randy Hanskat A season of stars: Fall sports honors awarded at PCHS by RANDY HANSKAT, Record staff writer For some, fall means pigskins and punts, fumbles and first downs, end zones and end arounds. Fall means football, football, football. Well, fall at the Park City High School means football, but it means a whole hell of a lot more when it comes to the sporting agenda. Fall actually actual-ly is a time of four sports at PCHS: football, girls' tennis, volleyball, and crosscountry. All four sports vied for honors Monday night, Nov. 22 at the high school at the annual fall sports awards banquet. OK, so the word banquet may have been pushing things just a bit it was a dessert night in actuality. The members of each team were called to the forefront and were given certificates of participation. Some were then given letters. Others received receiv-ed special awards. Since our space is somewhat limited at the Park Record, we will simply detail the special awards presented Monday night. Girls' volleyball It was a season of rebuilding for the Miner girls' volleyball team. Under first year coach Carol Bryan, the team didn't win a match, but got consistently con-sistently better, and looks to be strong heading into next season. Tracey Montgomery was selected as Captain of this year's team. Melanie Turner was Most Valuable Player. Karen Higman won both the Sportsmanship and the Most ImprovedtPlayer awards, while Katie Colet-ti Colet-ti also was given a Most Im proved Player award. Crosscountry -, bibnf-ir;" '' '" ; -i: ..i'hi; f-sy ."'!. It was an excellent season, for the Miner crass country teams,, highlighted by all-time Park City highest finishes in both region and state competition. Chosen as Most Valuable Runner for the girls was Cheryl Hannay, whose third place at state was the best ever for a Park City runner. Robert Simmons, who is only a freshman, won the boys' Most Valuable Runner award, topping off bis season by turning in the best boys' finish in the state race. The Most Improved Runners were Julie Stewart and Mike Sowards. Girls' tennis The Miner girls' tennis team was very strong this season, finishing third at state, beaten out only by a hair by Grantsville and Lehi. The team should be one of the strongest for the next couple of years at PCHS, as none of the starters from this year will graduate. Jessie Whitesides, a junior who finished second in state in number one. singles, won the Captain award. Carrie Miller, who is just a sophomore, was selected Most Valuable Player for her state championship in number three singles. Senior Katie Wade was given the Sportswoman trophy, while junior Misha Bradford was named Most Improved Player. Football The Park City football team enjoyed great success again this season, going undefeated through its Region Nine season, and going all the way to the state 2A semifinals. The season marked the end of the line for a superior senior class, which posted the only winning junior varsity record as sophomores, went to the state 2A semifinal last year as juniors, and this year did the same as seniors. In addition to the awards presented Monday night, numerous players received all-region honors. See boxed story about that. Selected as Captain was Darren Bean, who anchored the defense, calling call-ing all the plays, and provided great blocking on offense. Most Valuable Player was Shawn McMillan, who played almost every down all season, both on offense, defense, and special teams. Most Valuable Lineman was Pete Meuzelaar, who neutralized opposing players all season long. Eric Long won the Sportsmanship award, while Mike Spencer was chosen as Most Improved.
