Show Page A10 Thursday, April 14, 1988 Park Record Park City By RON GEORG Record staff writer The Park City Animal Clinic, owned own-ed and operated by Dr. Lyle Jackson, has passed an evaluation of its procedures and premises by the American Animal Hospital Association. Associa-tion. The AHAA is a 55-year-old organization founded to expand and improve care for house pets, as opposed op-posed to livestock. Most animal care in the past had been directed toward livestock, but as people began to invest more care in their pets, the AHAA was formed to set up guidelines for treating pets. Today, those guidelines are enough to fill a notebook on their own. The AHAA sends an inspector out to spend half a day observing the clinic's operations to make sure the guidelines are followed. Following the AHAA's standards, an animal clinic becomes quite a bit like its human counterpart. The clinic is required to have a separate surgical suitewhere operations can be performed apart from the daily operations of the clinic. Blood samples are a critical part of properly diagnosing a patient, so the clinic is required to either do its own blood processing, or having access ac-cess to a lab. Park City Animal Clinic does some of its own, but most New cancer book presented Park City volunteers for the American Cancer Society presented the latest book on cancer to the Park City Public Library and to the Park City Care Center on March 17, 1988. The American Cancer Society Cancer Book, published Sept. 1986, is the definitive cancer reference from the world's leading authorities on the subject. Since cancer remains our number two killer, second only to heart disease, the volunteers feel that there will be many people interested in using the reference book and the packet of booklets packaged with t, In 1986, about 4,000 Utahns have been or will be diagnosed as having a potentially lethal form of cancer. The book contains the most up-to-date information about cancer available anywhere outside of specialty journals. It was written by 46 leading cancer specialists from about the country, each of whom contributed a chapter. The book is part of a packet of materials presented. The library packet contains other information helpful to cancer patients and their families; such as booklets on pain control, unproven cancer treatments, chemotherapy and radiation, insurance and many more items. The medical center packet contains con-tains technical materials for medical professionals about the latest methods in treating cancer. The American Cancer Society Cancer Book has been prepared under the editorial direction of Arthur Ar-thur I Holleb, vice president for medical affairs of the society. The most important aspect of the hook is that it is optimistic. The subtitlePrevention, sub-titlePrevention, Detection, Diagnosis, Treatment, Rehabilitation, Rehabilita-tion, and Cure tells the real story of the book. It stresses the fact that half of all cancer patients can be saved by currently available medicine and technology. All of the informaion is presented so as to be understandable and usable by the lay reader. It dispels some of the mythology surrounding cancer and will enable people to overcome their anxiety and seek medical help while it still can do the most good. The book will be most helpful to the families of the cancer patient. Walk to fight defects WalkAmerica and March of Dimes will organize a walk in Park City to help fight against brith defects April 23. TeamWalk, the "corporate arm" of WalkAmerica, encourages en-courages company employees to band together as a team, perhaps with a company-sponsored T-shirt T-shirt or logo. Employees each obtain ob-tain their own pledges, so there is little or no cost to companies. Sponsor sheets can be obtained at local 7-Eleven stores. The 10-K walk will start at 8:00 a.m. at City Park. Call March of Dimes at 363-5500 for more information. Animal Clinic passes blood is sent to Salt Lake. AHAA clinics are also required to have a radiology department. Upstairs at the Park City clinic, a huge X-ray machine satisfies that requirement. The machine has an ironic "Chernobyl" sticker from a witty employee. Another requirement Jackson's clinic meets for AHAA is recordkeeping. record-keeping. "We can't provide continuity continui-ty of care without proper records," said Jackson. Much of the care animal clinics provide today is, according to Jackson, the result of experiments intended to learn about human medicine. "The only barrier to animal care is expense," said Jackson. "As far as technology goes, if there's an operation that's done on humans, its already been done on an animal." It usually takes a town of about 15,000 permanant residents to support sup-port a clinic, said Jackson, but his clinic survives here because (and this is an observation, not a statistic) Park City has such a high percentage of pets. Of course, no animal is completely content with just health they want to look good, too. To keep them looking sharp, Jackson employs Rowena, a local certified dog groomer who comes highly recommended from members of the Record staff. Courcheval still sister by NANCY VOLMER Park City Chamber Bureau In July of 1984, Park City became the proud sister to Courchevel, France. Four years later, uncertainty uncertain-ty exists as to whether Courchevel is still Park City's sister city. For those of you who are confused, the answer is "yes" Courchevel is still Park City's sister city. But the cultural exchange programs initiated in-itiated in 1984 have gradually subsided subsid-ed and there isn't much happening to indicate the relationship still exists. Not to worry, the sister city program pro-gram is undergoing a resurgence. A new committee now exists and is taking charge of reinstating some of the sister city programs.
