"' "'!)- 1 i ' 11111 .L.1" 1 " To help people appreciate their current displays upstairs, the Kimball Art Center is sponsoring a free workshop with Royden Card and Jenni Christensen, whose woodcuts and etchings are currently featured in the upper gallery. Ethching and woodcut are both early forms of printing, and they are fast becoming lost arts in there days of computer publishing. Card and Christensen are noted in their respective arts, both having been featured in permanent per-manent collections. The workshop will start at 2 p.m. Feb. 13 in the studio space at the Kimball. Any interested people peo-ple are welcome to attend. The lectureworkshop will be quite informal, in-formal, and it should last about an hour. Donovan to play in Salt Lake "Who are Superman and Green Lantern Superman and Green Lantern!," I was sitting up in bed shouting at the t.v. On the screen, some button-up type was struggling with an audio daily double on Jeopordy. The answer was, the two superheroes named in Donovan's classic, "Sunshine "Sun-shine Superman." Donovan, for those of you who would have trouble with that clue, is a Scottish pop singer from the late sixties. His most famous tune, "Mellow Yellow," is one anyone over the age of twenty ought to recognize in fact, it still gets A.M. radio play. Donovan, who goes by just that one name, also has a corp of fans who realize his music goes way beyond either of the fore-mentioned pop tunes. His music is.'solidly rooted in the folk-rock movement of the late sixties, its lyrics have social comment, and his tunes are intrigu- Art contest in Davis Artists who are now, or have ever been, residents of Davis County should begin planning their entries for the annual Davis County Competition Com-petition Show: "Competition 88," at the BountifulDavis Art Center. The juried exhibit is scheduled for May 15 through June 17, 1988 at the BDAC, 2175 South Main, Bountiful. Original paintings, drawings or prints are eligible, and are limited to three works per artist to enter. Entry En-try fee is $10. It is requested that works entered in this year's competition com-petition have been completed within the past year and never before exhibited ex-hibited at the BountifulDavis Art Center. Receiving for this exhibit will be Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. both days. Cash merit awards will be given for first, second and third place. Honorable mentions will also be presented. The BountifulDavis Art Center is a public, non-profit arts center serving serv-ing Davis County and the State of Utah. Anyone who missed his last performance at the Zephyr a couple years ago should make every attempt to get down there Feb. 12, when Donovan will return to the Zephyr. Appearing in Park City this weekend: At Steep's, at the Resort, the Rhythmights, formerly the Pat Caranahan Band, will bring their funky reggaejazz sound to Park City. Ci-ty. The Rhythmights feature local Pat Carnahan, Berklee music school graduate, on guitar and keyboards. He lends his jazz background to the band's reggaerock style to create a unique, high-energy rock sound with a funky rhythm. - ; ; The band will play Feb. 11 and 12 at Steep's.7 The Alamo will feature their house band, the Block and Tackle Band. Expect a good, beer-drinking time from these guys. The Block and Tackle Band is a country-rock band, featuring some great original material as well as favorites from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, and Jimmy Buffet, among others. The band will play Thursday, Friday Fri-day and Saturday. At the Grubsteak, which features mellow, accoustic musicians to entertain diners, will showcase the talents of solo musician Brian Ellison. Through Feb. 14 Ellison will be entertaining diners with his popular tunes on piano and guitar. As always, The Pub at the Yarrow Yar-row will feature the lively country sounds of local solo artist of Kat James! 1 , .-.'' v;'"' ' .
