Ugh! About this point you are wondering wonder-ing why the Park Record would care about such things. After all, Sun Valley is quite the trek from Park City. But wait a minute, Batman. Weren't there lots of Utah people, including in-cluding your basic Park City gorp-eaters, gorp-eaters, entered in the race? Why, Robin, I think you're right. That Sun Valley thing was called the Boulder Mountain Tour and of the 525 racers entered, 38 percent of them were from Utah. They made the trip to Sun Valley to enter the open event, which featured any skiing ski-ing style chosen by each competitor. According to Ken McCarthy, guru of the Park City Junior Nordic Team, the race is a fun time. You kind of get that idea when he tells you that hot wine and pizza are the staples at the aid stations along the race route, and when he tells you many of the competitors wear costumes. But how much fun can be had over 30.8 kilometers, right? I mean we're not exactly talking about eating a bowl of ice cream or something else fun. Oh, but yes we are, Batman. McCarthy Mc-Carthy says the course has 1,000 feet of vertical drop along its 30.8 K. Now that does sound fun! The race starts at the Galena Lodge and runs down to town along the Big Wood River, the second year in a row. Doesn't that seem ulterior to you, Watson? McCarthy, the hometown boy did good at Sun Valley, winning the overall crown of the Mountain Tour with a time of 1.16.29 (hours, minutes, seconds). He had the fastest time by almost two and a half minutes. Two other locals deserve mention t he Ericksons, Steve and Jenny. Both were third overall in the men's and women's brackets, respectively. Not too shabby. Other overalls were Rob Landis in sixth and John Allsen in 10th. But to bring greater glory to the greater number, let us now progress into individual, classes, where success suc-cess is easier to attain. Men, first. The Park City Junior Nordic Team did well in the men's 13-19 year-old category. Michael Kane was second in the bracket, John Moreton third, Solim Gasparik fourth, and Tom Miller ninth. As in the overall results, McCarthy McCar-thy and Erickson finished first and third in the men's 30-39 year-olds. The top three overall times came from the old men, it seems. Shocking! Shock-ing! Park City did well in the 40-49 year-old men, with Ray Groth in sixth, and brother Richard in 12th. On to the women. Jenny Erickson took second in the women's 20-29 year-olds. "Sweet Lou," Ventures continue to impress by RANDY HANSKAT, Record staff writer In the land of slammin' and jammin', where getting big air is more important than what kind of shoes you wear, "Sweet Lou" Hudson and "Mr. Three-Pointer", Peter Marth, continue to pound the hardwood and the opposition. Both led their teams to choice wins Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the Treasure Mountain Middle School. The biggest win of the night was orchestrated by Mr. Three-Pointer the way a waltz is orchestrated by Straus. Marth dumped in 17 points to fuel the Ventures to a 76-36 hammering of the Olympic Hotel. The other high scorers on the night were the Brewmeisters of Wasatch, the best team money can buy. The Brew Crew could be nicknamed the Wrecking Crew due to their lineup. Leading the way is Sweet Lou Hudson, formerly of the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA. Sweet Lou nailed 20 points for the Wasatch dynamo. But a new ringer was in attendance Tuesday night, Chris Wians. Wians added 14 points to the Brew total. He is a former University of Utah player, who has also played in Europe. Hudson and Wians were too much for the Back Doctors of Cofer Chiropractic. The Spines tried to hang tough, but went down 60-53. Terry Christiansen, that bar basher when not on the basketball court, had 27 points in the losing cause. The other two games of the night were close affairs. Johnson-Hogle outscored Stein's 14-7 in the final quarter to lock up a 44-41 win. Brett Talbot had 16 points for the Zoo team. Finally, Blue Flame Heating outlasted the Alamo in overtime 50-46. Keith Bronstein, that rugger turned hoopster, had a massive 10 points for the losers, while Brian Wagner had 14 for the Flamers. Wagner scored four of his team's six points in the overtime period. The Ventures and Wasatch sit atop the league with 2-0 records. Then comes Valley Monument at 1-0. At 1-1 are Cofer, the Flamers, and Johnson-Hogle. The Alamo will remember they are 0-1. Then at the bottom are Stein's and the Olympians at 0-2. Feb. 13 will open at 6 p.m. with Cofer vs. the Monuments. At 7 p.m. will be the Olympians vs. Stein's. At 8 p.m. the Flamers will battle the Brewers, and at 9 p.m. the Alamo will take on the Ventures. Freestylers do it up at Telluride by RANDY HANSKAT Record staff writer That crazy bunch from ParkWest, you know 'em, they're constantly bumping and jumping, twisting and turning, and doing otherwise unthought-of things on skis. Well, they were at Telluride, Colorado this past Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 4-7 doin' their collective thing in a freestyle skiing competition hosted by the Intermountain Freestyle Division. The meet was very large, with more than 200 competitors entered over the four days. Although put on by Intermountain, other regions attended, at-tended, as well, such as Rocky Mountain and Far West. Also on hand were a handful of U.S. Freestyle Team members, looking for a final tuneup before heading to Calgary and the Winter Olympics, where freestyle skiing will be a demonstration sport. But' as is our norm, the Park Record concerns itself with the exploits ex-ploits of our local population. Here is what the local kids did in Telluride. Ballet kicked off the first day of the meet on Thursday, Feb. 4. There, Beau Brinkerhoff was in top form. The local JII (ages 14 and 15) won his bracket. Joey Whitesides, another local, was fifth in the JIIs. Jim Faull . took third in the JI category (ages 16-18), and John Hocking grabbed fourth in the senior men's bracket. David Berry took second se-cond in the JIII (ages 12-13) group to round out the local guys. Jacquie West was fourth in the junior women's category. The second and third days at Telluride were for bumpin', something the Colorado resort is famous for on its Palmyra run. Again, Brinkerhoff had the best local result, swamping the JII field again for the win. Park City's Kevin Holliday was third in the JIIs. Berry was again strong in the Jills, taking second. Sean Smith was seventh in the JIs. West was sixth in the women's category. Sunny skies were the background Sunday for the final day at Telluride, a day for aerials. Berry showed his overall expertise, exper-tise, this time grabbing the top Park City result, another second in the Jills. Smith took third in the JIs, with Tom Olsen seventh, Faull 11th, and Matt Kean 14th. The best JII result was Whitesides in 13th. The most important results were the combined standings. There Park City had two placings. Berry was second se-cond in the JIII overalls, Faull was third in the JI overalls. . , .&A......,i r 4 (0 'A . . a.. 'M.-.WU . r AW .
