Events High School Results lr jajk- Ml MY'-? r' fl MK ' , ' Horses, by JENNIFER MADGIC Record staff writer Despite being diagnosed lame in a race held three days previous, horse Jet, along with riders Con and Todd Wadsworth, were overall victors in last Saturday's Park City Ride & Tie. Claiming six of the past 10 Park City events, the Wadsworth brothers gave their 13-year-old horse credit for the win. Jet, who was named best conditioned condi-tioned horse in last year's Ride & Tie, was chosen to compete in the Race of Champions held in Brianhead on July 6. He was pulled from the 100-mile race 30 miles into the course because of lameness. But on Saturday, the horse held and the Wadsworths won for their second consecutive year. "It's kind of a funny thing," said Todd following the race. "He has this phenomenon about him that he pulls out lame in races over about 30 miles. But he's been a great horse and he seems to pull through for us up here." Jet was pulled from the Levi International Inter-national Ride & Tie three weeks ago in the final vet check for a similar problem. The Wadsworths, who have won three International Levi Ride & Ties, were third coming out of the Competition was tough In Recreation Aa Jet and Uinta, pull through first vet check, 11.6 miles into the course. Losing about five minutes on the first horse and rider team, Patrick Davies and Nick Larsen, the Wadsworths continued tagging behind the second-place team until about the final five miles. "After the final vet check I pushed him as hard as he, would go," said Con who has competed in eight of the Park City Ride & Ties. The brothers say that Jet should be "good for at least another two years" before retiring from the Ride & Tie scene. Despite having a well-conditioned horse, the brothers said "hard work and dedication" have been a big factor fac-tor in winning ride and ties. Their hard work helped them chip close to 15 minutes off last year's time of 2:52.57. The trio managed to finish the 26.2-mile course this year in 2:37.08. Davies and Larsen looked to be the team to beat on Saturday after pulling pull-ing out of both vet checks first. Finishing in 2:39.39, the Salt Lake City duo were spurred with the help of their horse who apparently was able to make fast recoveries out of the vet checks. Six-year partners, Ron Nehring and Howard Ingle, finished in 2 : 46.51 for third overall. Riding Nimrod, the duo thought they could have done better if it had not been for troubles in the second vet check . Saturday's 26.2 mile Ride & Tie. Right: Park City resident, resi-dent, Julie McKay, paired with Kent McLaren to take first place in the man woman category. Neal Palumbo According to Ingle, the team "was doing real well," pulling out second in both vet checks. In the second vet check, however, Nehring was held up due to trouble concerning the reading of the horse's pulse and respiration. "We lost about eight minutes," said Ingle. "It was very frustrating. Our heart monitor showed the horse's pulse to be 16 and the P and R (pulse and respiration) lady told us it was 20." Ingle said they lost about two minutes in the first loop of the course when Nimrod broke off his tie. "Those extra minutes probably cost us second place," said Ingle. "It was a good race. You've got to give it to the Wadworths. They really showed just how good they are." Four place overall and fourth in the men's division were Joseph Brown and William Sayers, finishing in 2:48.32. Fifth went to Gary Thayne and Bill Nelson in 2:59.06 and sixth went to the manwoman team of Kent McLaren and Julie McKay. Claiming first in their division, divi-sion, McLaren and McKay finished the course in 3:08.16. Marsha Groth and Christophe Schork claimed second in the menwomen division and seventh overall, finishing with a time of 3:15.46. Bev Gray and M.J. Riding Moky, the Stoddard's held a comfortable lead throughout the majority of the 14.7-mile course, but were unable to catch the Maben's in the final section. Dick and Jennifer finished in 1:50.16 and Bill and Joshua finished in 1:51.27. Bill was the number one finisher in last year's Greenhorn with partner Ty Wadsworth. Buzz and Brad Marden took third overall in the Greenhorn. After acting ac-ting as head veterinarian over many of the Park City Ride & Ties, Buzz finally decided to try one out for himself. Snagging his son from Washington the pair competed for their first year. Fourth place and third in the men's division was claimed by Jeff Grandison of Roy and David Wagner of Salt Lake City. Gina Uyetake and Joyce Larsen claimed the top women's position, outpacing Park City combo Sena Taylor and Vicki Ross. Taylor and Ross came close to catching cat-ching Uyetake and Larsen when the winners missed their last tie going into the finish. "It was nip and tuck the whole way," said Gina following the race. "We had to back-track on our last tie and we lost some time." Season passes to the Park City Ski Area were distributed to top malemale, malefemale, and femalefemale finishers in the 26.2 mile course. Top team members in the Greenhorn event were given season passes to ParkWest Ski Resort. . NMlPilumbo I T |
