Show Park Record Thursday, April 30, T987 Page A5 Gary has got 'moore' going in the right direction ( ?n V?rA ' by JENNIFER MADGIC Record staff writer Living here for over nine years you wouldn't classify Gary Moore as your average 'ski bum.' Although at times he might appear to fit the mold, with tanned face, drink in hand, partying at a local barbeque, there's moore to Gary than you think. Numerous nicknames distinguish personality traits only a guy like a 'Moore' could have. But like his ski bum-ish appearance, the nicknames only seem to touch the surface of a someone deeper. Moore's occupation is a little hard to put a finger on. You may have seen him dressed in a ski instructor's instruc-tor's uniform getting ready to lead a little old lady across the slopes. Or you may have seen him flipping records in the KPCW studio. Or possibly you've seen him on T.V., or a local bar or doing cartwheels down Main Street with a soccer ball in hand. Sound a little crazy? Well, that's Gary Moore, up close and personal.. per-sonal.. .if you dare let him get that close. As a 31-year-old, nine-year veteran of the Park City lifestyle, Moore has tried to live his life within a very simple premise: He likes to be happy hap-py and to be happy he has to do things that make him happy. It's a premise which certainly sounrnerry andiull of irivolity, T but as we all knowit's a little fl t was C 1 V Park City Profile unrealistic to say the least, which even Moore is quick to admit. From teaching skiing at Park City Ski Area, hosting his own radio show at KPCW on Wednesdays (The Gary "Jazzin"' Moore Show, 3 to 5 p.m.), interviewing local sports persons on Channel 45, organizing summer soccer soc-cer tournaments, pounding nails. ..you name it and Gary Moore has probably done it. "There's been a lot of tough times," said Moore. "You've got to keep a good mental attitude in this town because there's so many real estate agents driving Audi's and Saab's around and here you are with a great job all winter than all of a sudden you're doing anything you can just to pay the rent and you're ' not driving that Saab around." Moore says he has gone through all sorts of odd jobs around town trying try-ing to pay the rent in past years. The problem lies in the fact that most of the stuff he does he doesn't get paid for, which makes for some pretty lean deposits come pay day. Moore figured one year he spent more hours volunteering than actually actual-ly working to get paid. And between volunteering for the radio and T.V. stations in town, he can't possibly have much more time for anything else. As the newly appointed "non-paid" sports editor for Channel 45, Moore a good season, and we couldn't be it V' 1 V ,7- happier about our decision over 7 years ago to make Park City the home of our family and business. We try to put ourselves In our guests' shoes (or ski boots, as It were) and treat them very well. That's why when we successfully served over 8000 guests, they'll keep coming back. PROPERTY MANAGEMENT 750 East Hwy 248. Park City. Utah 801 -649-6606 1 I says sports has been the driving force of his life. Growing up in the small town of Boyne, Mich., Moore grew up competing com-peting on his high school's football, baseball, track, cross-country, basketball and ski teams. When it was time for him to move on from high school, it only seemed natural to pursue a life as a ski instructor. "t. ( Of course being a sports fanatic is not always conducive to make the big bucks, but Moore believes some day all his efforts will pay off... hopefully that day will come in four years. "I decided I wanted to be financially finan-cially secure by 34," said Moore, noting he's got a lot of work ahead of him. "This town has been great as far as giving me the opportunity to do things first-hand. Yeah, I've had some regrets about not going to college, col-lege, but I believe you can do anything you want as long as you put the effort in." So for the past couple of years ever since having knee surgury, following a skiing accident, Moore has been taking a serious look at life. Driving down a multitude of avenues, Moore has varied in style as much as playing the role of sports announcer on Channel 45, to following follow-ing through with his idea to come up with a better post-operative knee brace. "After being in a brace for so long I knew there was a better solution," Dan and Kim Met nan. Owners. Resort Property Management 649 - f : . said Moore. "I'm fairly inquisitive about things that don't work. If we can put people on the moon, why can't we make a better brace? As far as a post-operative knee brace is concerned, Moore took his inquisitive mind and set out to design one which he thought would make more sense. Many letters and a feasibility study later, Moore is currently looking look-ing for some capital to get his project pro-ject underway. He remains optimistic op-timistic his idea will sell. You may notice optimism rings loud and clear in many of Moore's endeavors. According to Moore, the trait, which often gets him into trouble, trou-ble, keeps him going when he gets down. "Sometimes I would love to be a materialistic person," said Moore. "But there's no way you can get ahead of the game working seasons. Some people find it kind of a difficult town to live in. A common transient question is... 'Well, are you going to stay for the summer?' Well, yeah.. .I've stayed for the past nine summers. It's a tough call because you wonder what you're doing here sometimes." Moore admits he has "learned" not to be materialistic through the 1 , Hex? t " years, deciding to choose a life of living liv-ing in the mountains making less money, instead of moving to a big city ci-ty and trying to get rich. Park City, says Moore, is the perfect place not to get rich in. However, Moore says Park City is less than perfect in many other aspects. "This is a small town. If someone says this guy is a drunk and you happen hap-pen to see him fall down on the sidewalk three days of the week, yeah, then you can believe the statement state-ment the guy's a drunk. But when people make statements about you and say this and that, if they don't even know you... I don't think that's good. I try not to do anything like that until I meet people." As far as meeting people goes, Moore is quite good at it, especially when it comes to girls. Although there is no one "special" on Moore's itinerary as of yet, Moore says he is going to wait to get married until he is financially secure. "You know about 75 percent of all divorces happen because of money problems," said Moore. "That's the last thing I need." That's not the only time a statistic hits home for Moore. , Although Moore has been known to tip a few in local bars, he admits he likes to get in the habit of going dry for a couple of months a year. Moore says one out of five children of alcoholics become alcoholics themselves. And since his father was an alcoholic. ..why take any chances? Trying to sum up Gary Moore's character is not an easy task.
