Show 1 Park Record Thursday, May 15, 1986 Page B1 Muckers lose to rui uic runi vuy MUCKers, me time to get serious is now. After a disappointing 20-7 loss to Brigham Young University last weekend at home, the Park City Rugby Football Club will begin its regular season May 17 at 2 p.m. at the University of Utah. Originally the Muckers were to have gone to Missoula, Mont., to play in the Maggot Festival last weekend. But a lack of players willing will-ing to drive to Montana forced the Muckers to bag the Maggot Fest and substitute the preseason game with BYU. "We lost because of a combination of things," said Mucker Jack Walzer. "We were really minus five key players. Some were injured, a couple went up to Montana and some were on vacation. Because it wasn't a scheduled game we really didn't have a full team." However, for the first 15 minutes of the game it didn't look as if the Muckers were going to miss the missing players. Paul Lamphier nailed a penalty kick to put the Muckers ahead 3-0. At halftime the Park City team trailed just 4-3. But then things fell apart. Despite the Muckers' winning most of the lineouts and tackling very well, BYU was able to score a couple of tries via long breakaways. "A couple of their scores were fluky plays. Those long breakaways don't usually happen to us," Walzer said. "We all played pretty well, just not well enough to win." Matt Lamphier's try in the second half finished off the Mucker scoring. "Even though we were short those players I feel we should have won anyway," Walzer said. "We beat them last year and they aren't as good this year as they were last year. I guess we really didn't have the old Mucker enthusiasm we took the game too lightly." Playing well in the absence of some of the more seasoned veterans were Rick Miller and Paul Chit-wood. Chit-wood. Jeff Smith also did well grabbing grabb-ing a lion's share of the lineouts and Bryan Jameson played very aggressively ag-gressively and tackled well. The Muckers will venture into the May 17 contest at the U. of U. with a 2-2 preseason record. Last year in f the Great Basin Union (Utah and 1, Southern IdahojL the. Mockers finish,- ed second. Nine Miners qualify for by KURT KIDMAN Record staff writer Nine members of the Park City High School track team have qualified for the state track meet on the merits of their performances at last weekend's region meet. Park City Ci-ty has never before sent that many athletes to state in track. Leading the qualifiers at the May 10 region meet at Lehi High School was Scott Tatum who won the 110-meter high hurdles and qualified Centurions ride to Harris's rescue by KURT KIDMAN Record staff writer Madonna Harris is back in the saddle sad-dle again. The transplanted New Zealand bicycle racer recently lost her wheels when her sponsor decided to pull out after the season had begun. All of a sudden Harris, a Park City resident, had to re-evaluate her goals. On that cold afternoon more than six weeks ago the Miners shot a collective col-lective 401 and finished fifth in the region meet. By contrast on Monday at the St. George Golf Course the Miners capped cap-ped a successful season by shooting a team total 342 and finishing as the fourth-best 1-A2-A team in Utah. Wasatch won the state meet with a 313, followed by Union at 326 and Richfield at 334. North Sanpete tied the Miners with a 342, ' V). ...... - - '"-, v 1 . . r .:-. i i H-c r jv i ..-- . v - ' . "Tatum has a very good chance at winning (the hurdles) in the state tournament," said track coach Bill Kahn. "Last year he ran the fastest time in the state in the qualifying heat and then hit a hurdle in the final and placed sixth. In a 14-second race if you make one slip you've lost. If Tatum can run a clean race he should win." Tatum's victory helped the Miner boys' team to a tie for fourth with Union in the region tournament. Grantsville placed first in the region season. But thanks to the Centurion Texas Metros racing team, Harris can concentrate con-centrate on racing again. "The Centurions are one of the top two women's racing teams along with 7-Eleven," Harris said. "I could have joined the team last year but I decided to stay with my old team. Joining the Centurions is a nice option for me; it was nice of them to offer me a spot after the season had begun. They had to scrape and scramble a little bit to find me a spot on the team." Harris said she is upset that her Winning me individual honors were Wasatch's Tom Bonner, who shot a 72, and Bruce Summerhays Jr., who shot a 75. The top Park City golfer was Mark Verrone who fashioned an 82, followed follow-ed by Jeff Keye at 85. Park City's Jacob Doilney added an 87 and Robert Jones shot an 88. "The way we started out the year I wouldn't have thought we could have placed fourth in state, but the kids showed good improvement all year," said Coach Paul Willard. "We got some great performances from some of the kids in the state tournament. Jones broke 90 for the first time this year in competition and Matt Ott, our fifth golfer, shot EYU in finds the going tough as he grabs meet, Wasatch was second and Lehi finished third. Also qualifying for the state meet for Park City were Bruce Buckner in the 400-meter run and the shotput . Ron Mathews in the discus and 300-meter hurdles; and Mike Richards in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs. "I think that Richards has a good chance of placing in state in the 1600-meters and Buckner should place in state in the shotput," Kahn predicted. The state tournament will be held old team had to be disbanded. She said she enjoyed racing with the girls on that team. "Yeah, it is really too bad that we couldn't stay together, I guess that is the way it goes sometimes. A couple of the other girls have found other sponsors and another one has decided decid-ed to stay pretty low key. I guess it will all work out." Harris's first race in the Centurion colors will be in New Jersey on May 25 and 26. She will then travel to Denver two weeks later for a race and then "will be busy after that right through the end of the year. " under 100 for the first time in competition." com-petition." The fourth-place finish is even more remarkable when you consider that Verrone and Doilney are freshmen, Keye and Ott are sophomores and Jones is a junior. The top five golfers will all be back next year. "The kids have a great opportunity opportuni-ty next year to improve on this year's record," Willard said. "They are already psyched for next year. I believe that the next two or three years should be good ones for the team. We're definitely looking for better things. Some of the kids have set individual goals for themselves, and if they accomplish them our last preseason the bull during a scrum against state track tournament Saturday, May 17 at Brigham Young University. The other five Miners who qualified for state are members of the girls' team. Nevertheless, the girls' team as a whole finished dead last in the region meet. "We had a couple of injuries which really cost us a lot of points and hurt our chances in the region meet," Kahn explained. "Some of the girls did real well, better then they have ever done, but we just got beat . ' ' Abbey Peterson and Holly Hunter "The first few races back will be criteriums which are one-day events," she explained. "That will be better for me. I can get back into racing in the one-day races before the long stage races." Criteriums are sprint races in which the competitors go around a short track a set number of times. The longer stage races are run through the open roads, and the results of each stage are added together to give an overall winner. As for Madonna's old bicycle, "I guess it is just sitting in a garage somewhere," she said. golf meet team goals will be accomplished also." Willard said he is just a couple of golfers away from really having a run at the state championship. He believes two more golfers who could shoot in the mid-80s would add needed need-ed depth to the team and create a competitive attitude on the team which will make each golfer better. "I'm not saying we won't be a good team next year with the kids we have coming back," Willard added. add-ed. "We have a good chance at winning winn-ing some region meets. Right now I'm just really proud of how the kids played down in St. George. They represented Park City and the school very well." Brigham Young University. Despite Smith's efforts the both qualified for state in the 3200-meter run. Tracey Montgomery qualified in the 100-meter hurdles, Kathryn Willard qualified in the 300-meter hurdles and Kathy Han-nay Han-nay will race at the state meet in the 800-meter run. "It is really impressive that Holly and Tracey qualified because they are both freshman," Kahn said. "I think that both Abbey and Kathy have a good chance at placing in state. Actually all the girls have a chance or they wouldn't even be in the state meet." llmhlmh CP 7 ilP? "This year we have more kids at state than ever so I can't be too disappointed," Kahn said. "What really killed us this year is that we don't have any sprinters. They way track is set up in Utah, you could have three good sprinters and win state. You could have all the best distance runners and never win a region meet. Hopefully next year we will have some freshmen coming in who are quick." Is BmhHI |
