Proceeds from the door went towards funding of KPCW. But station manager Blair Feulner said the event, which will be continued each Wednesday, was mostly for fun. "Fundraisers are really not a primary source of revenue for the station," he said. "We get the bulk of our support from subscribers and other means. While we appreciate the money that comes in from events like the 'More Air' contest, the underlying purpose is more to just give people a good time." A good time was certainly had by all at Wednesday's opener. But before the contest con-test began, it was apparent that many patrons had no idea what to expect. "What's an air band?" and similar queries filled the air. For the uninitiated, an air band is halfway between mime and circus clowning. Contestants bring tapes of their favorite songs and then must lip synch the words and otherwise act out the performance per-formance as though they were actually playing the prerecorded tune. The air band concept is an offshoot of a time honored rock 'n' roll fantasy standing in front of one's mirror and strumming a nonexistent guitar (hence, "air guitar") to the accompaniment of one's stereo. Everybody wants to be a pretend rock star for at least a few minutes, right? The air band contest gives you your chance. Apparently, not many Parkites were up for the challenge of the contest debut. Besides winning entrants en-trants Agent 99, only one other act participated and it was sponsored by the bar. Dubbed Aretha and the Pointers, the assemblage of Black Pearl bartenders The Cowboy Bar will host The Legendary Blues Band on Thursday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 4. The Legendary Blues Band, which has been a back-up band for Muddy Waters, will play at 9 p.m. The cover charge is $5 on Thursday and $6 on Friday and Saturday. The Fabulous Thunderbir-ds Thunderbir-ds will be playing rock and blues on Monday, Dec. 6 and Tuesday, Dec. 7. (See L M Ski In and Ski Out! Acting out the song from behind the bar, backup singers John Harvey, Tom Long, and Mike Wade offered some impressively choreographed bump and grind. But the real star of the show was Aretha, er, Doug Tulloch, that is. Outfitted in a garish fright wig and shades, Tulloch flawlessly lip synched through Franklin's Frank-lin's upbeat "Think" and managed to throw in a few well-executed John Belushi style jumps and splits as well. Tulloch's show was even more impressive considering con-sidering that he was suffering suffer-ing from jet lag. A former bartender at the Pearl, Tulloch was flown in especially es-pecially for the event. All was for naught, however how-ever as the judges emcee Glenn Steigmeyer, Weber State dance company member mem-ber Rochelle Williams, Black Pearl employee Brad Bookmeyer and guitarist Don Carlson from the house band, Ace Pancakes gave first prize to the competition, Agent 99. A peculiar little New Wave-ish outfit which resembled re-sembled the Archies as much as it did the B-52s, Agent 99 came thoroughly prepared with props and punk style clothing. Members Mem-bers Marilyn Zinc, Therese Dillon, David Smith, Steven Lloyd, Arch Wright and Tom Willett enthusiastically thumped and plucked well-crafted well-crafted cardboard instruments. instru-ments. Perhaps the most stunning accoutrement to their show was the huge fake joint the members ceremoniously cere-moniously passed around between songs and after being awarded the $100 first prize. KPCW's "More Air" contests con-tests will continue each Wednesday for the next several weeks, culminating in a grand finale at the Black Pearl on Jan. 12 when all past winners will be invited separate story.)
