Show KPCW's Bar Wars was a breadwinner The Newspaper Thursday, August 12, 1982 Page A7 How long could you sit on a block of ice? How many beers could you drink for $5 How long could you bear listening to people singing "Ninety-Nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall"? Meeting those challenges and more were all part of KPCW's fundraiser held last Thursday on Main Street, "dubbed Bar Wars. Bar what? Bar Wars. Radio station manager Blair Feulner credits the great idea for the "fun raiser" to Terry Hogan of, where else? Great ideas. Even if Terry doesn't want to take credit for the scheme, it worked. Feulner said $2,097.80 was raised during the extravaganza, which revolved around fun and games at Main Street drinking establishments. The proceeds from the events went to the radio station. "It was very, very successful," suc-cessful," said Feulner. "We didn't anticipate the crowds we packed out everyplace. I think people like to have an officially-sanctioned officially-sanctioned drunk, although there were no reports of problems that the police had to deal with." The activities last Thursday Thurs-day included a limbo contest con-test at the Down Under, an-ice-sitting contest at the Alamo, a dance competition at the Black Pearl, ping pong and pool matches at Digger's, all the beer you could drink for $5 at The Club, dart throwing at the End Run, and the Dating Game at Mileti's. But the drinkers weren't out to just have a good time, they were out to win by competing with the other bars and clubs for most money raised. The grand winner was Lloyd Stevens at the Down Under. Lloyd's group of limbo lim-bo rockers managed to bring in $620, "by a combination of extortion, the limbo contest and a percentage of the bar take," said Feulner. For that big win, Lloyd wins a travelling trophy, which will be awarded to the next Bar Wars warrior in what has now been called an annual event. So low, in fact, that there is some dispute as to whether Rolf Sandburg actually ac-tually fits into the under-35 category. But who really cared anyway? Certainly not the two ice-sitters at the Alamo. While the Muckers warmed things up with their rendition of "Ninety-Nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall," Dan Larsen and Dennis Loomis sat indifferently on blocks of ice. When there was no sign of letting, or getting, get-ting, up after two hours, the bartender called it a tie. Perhaps he was afraid their brains were freezing. The Bar wars bonanza was just part of KPCW's tuna-raiser. tuna-raiser. Fuelner said that in addition to last week's radio campaign, there was a major-donor drive and a door-to-door campaign. All the figures aren't talied yet, but to date, $16,000 has been raised. Feulner said he'd hoped for $20,000, and the station may well near that mark if all the money pledged is actually received. "This may well turn out to be the most successful iuiid-raiser iuiid-raiser we've had," he said. Stay tuned for next year's Bar Wars. Bar what? Bar Wars.
