Show The Newspaper Thursday, August 12, 1982 Page A3 ftrf I ILeMers t tin EdlMaDr iM' Programs aplenty for'high schoolers Editor: I would like to express my appreciation apprecia-tion to the Park City High School Board of Education for the programs offered to students interested in scholastic achievement. The majority of our community is unaware of the opportunities available for our children who are willing to spend the additional time and effort required to profit from these advantages. My daughter, Denise, recently graduated from Park City High School. During her high school years she was given the opportunity to participate par-ticipate in summer workshops in math at the University of Utah and Drama and forensics workshops at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City. Many times during the school terms she was unable to participate in different dif-ferent scholastic meets because of conflicts con-flicts in schedules. But the opportunities oppor-tunities were there. We recently received the results of Advanced Placement Tests she had taken at the University of Utah. Advanced Ad-vanced Placement classes in math, english and history that she took her senior year at Park City High School, certainly helped prepare her to pass the tests with scores entitling her to 45 college credit hours. In the fall, she will be able to start at the University as a sophomore. Again, thanks to Dr. Jack Dozier, Kent Larsen, and all the teachers who took a special interest in helping make her aware of these programs. Barbara S. Winters Toomey says thanks Editor: As Director of the Park City Art Festival, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the 1982 Park City Art Festival. The outstanding outstand-ing support I received from the community was invaluable. Park City should be proud of the Park City Art Festival. In the words of an exhibiting artist, "Park City's Festival is one of the finest art festivals in the country." Sincerely, Sean Toomey Paul and Jeannie say thanks for help Dear friends: Although this letter is long overdue, we want you all to know how grateful we are to the people of Park City. It is difficult to express how we felt when we learned about your generous gift. Little did we know when we left Park City that this unfortunate turn of events would occur. However, the town's overwhelming show of concern made our personal crises easier to bear, knowing we had such wonderful friends who cared so much. We wish to thank each and every one of you who were instrumental in making the benefit in April such a huge success. Special thanks to Terry, Charlie and Doug, to Jody Bernolfo for donating the use of The Black Pearl for the evening and to Alias for supplying the music. We know there were many more town's people who donated their time and money and we send a big thank you to all of you. Of course, the check we received was fabulous, but more than that the time, love and care it obviously took to organize such an event was the morale booster we both needed during this difficult dif-ficult time. Your loving and loyal friendship will always hold a special place in our hearts. Paul and Jeannie Brown Auction a success Editor: The Kimball Art Auction was a great success. I appreciate and especially want to thank the artists who donated their work, the Kimball Art Center Staff, the Guild Officers and committees. A special thanks to auctioneer Don Kennedy for donating his time and to the community for their support. Linda Myers Guild President ChamberBureau thanks for Art Festival Editor: Park City's oldest annual event, the Park City Art Festival, charmed festival-goers with two days of visual and performing arts. For some participating par-ticipating artists, it was their best year ever, and comments received at the ChamberBureau Information Booth could not have been more positive. There was little objection to the $1 admission ad-mission fee, drinking on the street was at a minimum, and art lovers from all over remarked on the marvelous atmosphere, at-mosphere, quality and" variety of artwork, art-work, and the fact that the Park City Art Festival gets better every year. 1ms year, Festival Director Sean Toomey did a more than commendable job. Sean instituted several new ideas that reflected his professional under standing of how advanced planning and a genuine concern for both artists and visitors can make a festival of this magnitude a positive experience for everyone involved. It is no easy task. Sean and his staff have absolute admiration ad-miration from the ChamberBureau end of the community; events of this nature are an enormous undertaking. Many other individuals and entities deserve great thanks for the time and effort put in over the festival weekend. It's difficult to name them all, but we can at least name a few: Thanks to the Kimball Art Center Staff, the Art Festival Advisory Board, and our many wonderful volunteers, from the front gate welcoming crew to "Street A, B & C." Without you the festival would not have gone on. Thanks also to participating Park City service groups, food booths, Park City Municipal Corp., Police Department, Public WorJts Dept., and Mountain Metro, Park City Transportation, Park City EMTs and Fire Dept., Summit County Sheriffs, First Security Bank, University of Utah Traffic Control, and Art Fest parking attendants, who stood on the outskirts for many hours. The Park City Art Festival demands a lot of energy. It not only affects those individuals and entities mentioned above, it is also felt by those residents and businesses who must put up with crowded conditions and inconvenience caused by mobs decending on this small community. We hope, in one way or another, you enjoyed all there was to see and do last Art Festival weekend. Most important, we hope that it turned out to be a profitable weekend for all Park City businesses. Many thanks, Park City Area ChamberBureau Share RDA money with fire, school districts Editor: As a candidate for Fire Commission, I would like to call for cooperation between the Park City Redevelopment Agency and the Fire Commission to resolve part of the current dispute. The RDA is responsible for a loss in tax revenues of $57,650 by the Fire District and $497,250 by the School District. Park City resident's taxes must be raised to make up the loss if needed programs for fire protection and schools are to be provided. I propose that the RDA share with the Fire District and the School District a portion of the $975,000 tax revenue it receives this year to help offset off-set the loss to these districts and avoid the need for significant tax increases required to raise lost revenue. The RDA law allows such sharing. The reason I believe sharing is appropriate ap-propriate follows. The intent of the law authorizing an RDA was to remove blight by permitting an RDA to purchase pur-chase private property and make improvements im-provements using public funds. The funds were to come from the increase in tax revenues caused by the increased in-creased property valuation resulting from RDA actions. In Park City, the increase in assessed property valuation occurring since the creation of the RDA has been $18 million. The majority of this increase has been in Deer Valley, which is in the RDA boundary. It is difficult for me to see that the RDA is responsible for the entire en-tire $18 million growth. Most of this would have occurred without an RDA. For this reason I believe a portion of RDA tax revenues should be shared with the Fire and School Districts. I support the intent of the RDA to help remove blight and improve our community. By sharing tax revenue, the RDA will still have substantial funds left to make improvements, the Fire and School Districts will be able to provide needed services and the taxpayer will not be faced with substantial sub-stantial tax increases because of the RDA. Sincerely, Vince Desimone Fire Commission Candidate Enjoying the park in Park City Editor: We came from Phoenix with 6 and 12 year old daughters. Fortunately, the efficient gentleman at Central Check-in Check-in told us about City Park and the recreation program. Our children have enjoyed many constructive and wholesome activitiesfield ac-tivitiesfield trips, crafts, sports, hikes, campfires, play, library visits, and meeting new friends. All under the kind, patient, and competent supervision super-vision of Annie, Betty, and Les. Each of them relates to children in special and constructive ways, and we believe Park City is fortunate to have such a dedicated and professional summer recreation staff. It has been good to relax and enjoy Park City's "cool", and to hear my children say, "I want to go to the park today", instead of, "I'm bored, there's nothing to do." They are already making plans to return next summer. I thoroughly agree with them. Thanks, Park City. Joann Toole Festival has made it says long-time Parkite Editor: I've pondered the thought for several minutes, counting old friends through my mind friends seen just occasionally oc-casionally now and friends long gone the shocking conclusion must be accepted : I am the only person who was actively involved in Park City Art Festival Fes-tival I and Park City Art Festival XIII. So this letter is more to those old friends ; this is the way we should have done it! Sean Toomey as 1982's director has produced as great an improvement in quality over the '81 festival as did Tina Lewis when she became director under the sponsorship of the Kimball Art Center in 1979. So on behalf of all the old-time Art Festival folks, congratulations to Sean and his wonderful, cheerful and most competent staff. You've made the Park City Art Festival what we hoped it would become. Sincerely, David Chaplin Tip of the hat to IAE supporters Editor: On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Intermountain Actors Ensemble's Ensem-ble's Park City Shakespeare Festival, I would like to thank the following people without whom we would have not had the successful summer season we enjoyed at ParkWest. Jack Roberts and his super staff at the resort smoothed over the rough spots for us and put up with a band of crazy theatre people for two months. Thanks to Sean Toomey and his staff at the Kimball Art Center for all their technical support; sup-port; Garth Wilkinson and Sunn Classic Pictures for all the great costumes and props; the Skyrail crew and Mountainside Concerts for their help in coordinating their activities around our shows. I would also like to thank our intrepid in-trepid band of actors who came from all over the state to play the shows for us and my great staff, without whom I would have never gotten the festival on. I'd like to thank Stephanie for handling han-dling the box office and for her great intermission goodies, Matt and Vance for security, Linda Martin for the costume help, Bob Wright and Denna Wright for their help and support when we needed it and a special thanks to my two right hands, Tony and Anne who shared the dream and made it come true. Mike Draper and his parents par-ents who have supported IAE through thick and thin. Susan Griffiths for stage managing and Janine at the Irish Camel for her continued support. I would like to include a thank you to Susan Davis and the Park Record for their help and I'd also like to express our sincere appreciation to Pat and Russ and their staff at the Prospector Convention Center whose overwhelming over-whelming kindness and support throughout our entire season have enabled en-abled us to realize a number of dreams. And a special thank you to the audiences who trooped up the mountain moun-tain this summer to enjoy a four-hundred-year-old playwright. Because of all of the efforts I've mentioned and many others, IAE will be back next summer doing more Shakespeare in addition to our fall, winter and spring season at Prospector Square's theatre. Again my deepest thanks for the best summer season IAE has ever had! Ronald W. Burnett Resident Director Intermountain Actors Ensemble, Inc. The Park City Shakespeare Festival Ruggers give a cheer Editor: The Park City Rugby Football Club would like to thank all the people and institutions who made possible a very successful Arts Festival in 1982. To begin with, the club would like to congratulate Sean Toomey for a fine effort on the entire festival. Without his cooperation, our presence could have been abbreviated. Special thanks go to Mike Doilney for his donation of the Beer Garden area. Max Jarman and the Park Record people are especially appreciated for the water and electricity. Saving the day for the club was Cathy Benner of the Women's Soccer team and El Papagayo. The City Council was most gracious in granting us a beer license and agreeing to our contribution to the Art Festival. We hope all their weekends were as good as ours. Thank you Dean Brown for the stone bench and Dan Larson for the tremendous sales job on the T-shirts. Also, to all the club members who came out of the crowded street to lend a hand with the Beer Garden. Top honors go to Kenny Tedford who stayed with it all the way, Buddy Maachia for his first art festival, Lowell Carlson, Tom Lauder, Al LaMarre, Pogo Vance, Bob Lewis, George Austin, Charlie Downing, Black-ie Black-ie Jones, Steve Mann, Rick Phaler, and Miller Beer, who made it possible.
