Tretheway is no stranger to Utah climes. He was a Utah resident for 16 years until moving to Nevada 2V2 years ago, and has been to the Art Festival twice in the past. Currently, from his home near Lake Mead, he works on his carved portraits of fowl ("popular birds like screech-owls, elf owis, and cactus wrens") and is studying desert mammals like the bighorn sheep for future work. "The animals are tougher to do because they have a more complicated anatomy," said Tretheway. "The birds are a basic pattern." Working from a photograph, Tretheway first sets the animal down as a silhouette shape in baswood, then goes to work on it with pocket knives and exacto blades. Taxidermists' eyes go into the work and are painted. The final texture tex-ture and colors are applied, he said, with a wood-burning tool that is as precise as a tiny knife. "The real challenge is to get the right tone and color in," he said. The real test for Tretheway will come this weekend when he and many others exhibit their work to art aficionados. This year's Festival barely scratches the field of unusual art. You should have seen the stuff that didn't make it, according to director Sean Toomey. "We saw six-foot nutcrackers, faces drawn on the sides of stumps, dolls made of apples ("presumably, these would become less popular in the summer sum-mer sun as the day went on!), "and leather beer-can holders," said Toomey. Maybe next year. You never know what will come from the bizarre imagination of an artist. There's not too much you can put on a sticker these days that other cars don't have. Disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, steer-ing, front-wheel drive. Even a turbo is not so unusual in a certain caliber car. The difference comes in the way those things work together. The way it feels to accelerate, for instance. To take a sharp curve. To stop. Obviously, the only way to discover dis-cover this difference is to take a test drive. Which explains why a Saab salesman's pitch needs little more than one sentence: "Let's go for a ride!' The most intelligent car ever built.
