After all, how could a group of pacifistic Greenwich Green-wich Village types from the early sixties possibly make any sort of meaningful statement in our modern era of New Wave and conspicuous conspi-cuous consumption? Judging from the ecstatic response of the 8,000 or so people at ParkWest Saturday Satur-day night, Peter, Paul and Mary proved that their messages of peace, love and political liberalism are really real-ly about as anachronistic as this morning's headlines. The group selected songs which together formed a more concise statement of pacifistic values than was made on any of their early albums. Not that they're the type to push ideologies. They made their point as much through joyful interaction with the crowd and among themselves them-selves as with songs with explicit political statements. Indeed, there were only two "issue" songs included in the show the opening anti-nuke number, and Noel "Paul" Stookey's solo, "El Salvador." Salva-dor." Each member of the group performed solo in the second set. It was an interesting opportunity to see how the talents of each contribute to the sound and feeling of the group as a whole. Peter Yarrow clowned with the audience in the, number "Zip" and brought a soulful, searching mood to the PPM classic "Stew-ball." "Stew-ball." His personal form of humanism was manifestly present throughout. Paul's engaging capaciousness capa-ciousness was evident in his solo spot, as was his mastery of fingerstyle guitar technique. tech-nique. His musical interaction interac-tion with bassist Richard Kniss (the group's "silent" member) provided a basis of solid musicianship for the chilling number "El Salvador." Salva-dor." Mary Travers sang songs from her solo albums, at times turning towards a reflective, introspective mood. In the last song of the second set, before the crowd's standing ovation called the group back for encores, Mary altered the last line of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind ": "The answer my friend, is peace, and all of us working for it together." ppfe SGGGFifes the Infeepiep! . aL tnjti 1 Bfpy flpfe Festival park city furniture & design the emporium, hwy. 248 east p.o. box 1 088, park city, Utah, 84060 801 649-6913 hours mon-sat 9-5:30 I I 1 I I I I I I M i i i i i i i i i 1 i I I park city's only furniture store 4,000 sq. foot showroom professional design services available. 1 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I i I 1 I I I 1 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I A GU TDE T0 D I N TNG T N 1ARK ICI TTY 1 zzzzzzzzz Mountain Sustenance JJ l I I I MAIN ST.
