Sorenson bills his institute as a fitness program and a vacation, too, so emphasis is on having fun. Sorenson gives a series of lectures on food, exercise, and the chemical changes they produce in the body. For instance, he says, a person per-son who walks six miles a day can lose 60 pounds of body fat in a year-providing year-providing he doesn't replace re-place those calories used up in the walking. And, he notes, exercise is a depressant depres-sant to the appetite of those persons who have an excess of body fat, a stimulant to those who do not. Two registered nurses are on hand, and participants may chose to have their blood pressure and blood composition monitored. Sorenson said it is possible to reduce a high blood cholesterol level 50 percent in one month on the NIF diet and exercise program. Many participants return to the program year after year most thinner each year, others coming back to re-lose the weight they gained back. "If they go home and pay attention to what they've learned, they will continue to lose weight," Sorenson said. "They may return to a sedentary life with lots of food, but that's okay, too." Losing weight and staying fit depends strictly on individual in-dividual motivation. And, he added, it's not unusual for men to oppose their wives' intent to become thin and active. ac-tive. Others may send their wives away with orders to lose weight a method that does not usually work. There are several husband and wife teams doing the program right now, and several children. The program includes Soren-son's Soren-son's wife and seven-year-old daughter. Each winter, starting in October, Sorenson moves the institute back to St. George, his home base. From mid-April mid-April to mid-May, the program moves to Hawaii, then returns to Park City in June. Sorenson believes the cost of his program makes it the cheapest of its type in the country. "You can change yourself by changing that image you have of yourself," she said, explaining that some people who have been obese for many years may lose weight, but gain it back unless they begin seeing themselves as thin people. Sorenson believes he has the world's most rewarding job helping people make profound changes in their lives, and seeing them having fun while doing it.
