Show The Newspaper Thursday, June 18, 1981 Page A7 Kick Salt Lake habit, say local merchants SOOT ti i nTrnn t For many locals, "going shopping" means going to Salt Lake City. They hop in their car and make a 60-mile round trip to pick up a birthday birth-day present or a new sweater that they could've found just around the corner. Although new businesses continue to open in Park City, many residents have yet to visit them, and it's a trend local merchants hope to change. Beginning today, a four-day four-day promotion by merchants will hopefully change resident's minds about shopping in town. Called "Spend it with a Local," the campaign is aimed at acquainting locals with the services and merchandise available. "We want to get people out of the Salt Lake City habit," said Bonnie Bedford of the Chamber of Commerce. "We want to encourage people- to buy locally, not only for their convenience, but to keep the money at home where it can multiply in the community and come back in the form of sales tax revenues thai will mean a larger city budget for improved services." To encourage residents to buy nearby, local merchants are offering special prices and activities today through Sunday to kick off the spend local campaign. According to Edna Schettler of Minors Only, who was one of the merchants who proposed the campaign, these four days are only the beginning of a promotion to remind residents to think local when they think shopping.
