Hence, when Mother Nature decided to cast a surprise upon the Park City area this past Sunday with six inches of snow, Sunday's full slate of men and women's softball games was wiped out. ; And with the Cowboy Bar exercising its option to postpone its Monday night women's game with the Corner Store, only one soft-ball soft-ball game was played this past week. Monday night at the City Park, Janeaux's, backed by outstanding pitching from Jessie Whitmore and all-around all-around fine defensive play, defeated the Copperbottom Whopper Bottoms 17-0, in women's play. Neither team Monday was able to i score in the first inning, but Janeaux's . exploded ex-ploded for eight runs in the: second and coasted to a ' five-inning win. 1 Mariartne McKinney, , Tammy Polychronis and Lindsey Dudevoir paced . ' Janeaux's with a home run each while Whitmore aided her own cause with a triple. Whitmore was awarded the ' game ball ' signed by her teammates following her shutout win. Last Saturday, the High Rollers were scheduled to open the playoffs against the Apollos of Salt Lake at Rose Park. But with the Park City team appearing primed and ready, and a full contingent of officials on the sidelines, everybody showed but the Apollos. Hence, the High Rollers made : .their way into the semis by default. After a good start this season, the Apollos fell on hard times late in the year and dropped out of first place in the league. Following this demise, apparently, came apathy and the Apollos were having trouble fielding a team. This was the problem Saturday, according to High Rollers Captain Garry Moore "They have done this to us before. I should have known," Moore said. "But we had to show up and we did. I guess that's good we did." In the semifinal round, the High Rollers were scheduled to meet the Vikings of Salt Lake City Wednesday, June 17. The Vikings, according to Moore, have an experienced team that has been together for some time. The two teams met during the regular regu-lar season with the High Rollers dropping a tough, 2-0 decision. Results, unavailable unavail-able at press time, will be reported next week. Champs become chumps on opening day ... It didn't take long for the defending champions to get a taste of humility. The Woodhaus, the best team in Park City men's soft-ball soft-ball last year, was upset by the Hat Store 25-24 Tuesday night in the opening game of "the season. The Hat Store, a new team in the league this year, scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to insure the win. Leadoff batter Jim Green singled, advanced to third on another single, then scored on a hit off the bat of Bob Schapper. Green had five hits in five at-bats for the Hat Store, while Schapper picked up the win on the mound. Jeff Long smacked two homers for the winners, while Jeff Birrenkott and John Cran-dell Cran-dell each homered once. . Meanwhile, in the other Tuesday game, Mike Hogan's three-run homer in the fifth inning paced the Coleman Land Company Coconuts to a 21-8 victory over the Black Pearl. The game was called at the end of six innings. The Black Pearl held a slim 18-16 lead at the end of four innings, but fell victim to the Coconuts' four-run rally in the fifth. Also hitting homers for the winners were Phil Congino and Paul Lam-phier. Lam-phier. Congino, the pitcher, helped his own cause with a brilliant defensive play with the bases loaded in the bottom bot-tom of the fourth, turning a hard line drive into a double play. Mike Cornu and Paul Lampier each went four-for-four for the Coconuts.. |
