Show Page B2 Thursday, April 9, Oregon It would have been nice to have been able to call him the best in the West. But fourth best isn't too shabby. ' For the better part of three days. Park City's Jason Lawson dominated the Western Region Junior Olympic III championships at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon. On Friday, the 13-year-old racer defeated the best 12-and 12-and 13-year-old skiers in the Western states to win the men's downhill by a comfortable com-fortable eight-tenths of a ' Park City's Jason Lawson came within three gates of winning the combined title at the Junior Olympic III Western Regionals held last weekend in Oregon. 1981 The Newspaper brings out the best in young Park City skiers second over his nearest rival. ri-val. It was only Lawson's second downhill race of the season. On Saturday, he charged into second place in the men's giant slalom, finishing r7 hundredths of a second behind the winner, Keith Veyna of the Northern Division. Divi-sion. At this time he had accumulated only 3.15 race points in the two races, while second-place Brenden Fitzgerald Fitz-gerald of California had 28.01. Final II M ,Vr,tW. Then came Sunday's sla lom. In the first run, Lawson skied a flawless race, leaving leav-ing the rest of the field behind by more than two-and a-half seconds. Then came the second run. "Obviously, the strategy was to protect his lead," Park City Coach Bob Marsh said later. But local race-watchers will tell you that Jason Law-son Law-son has only one speed: flat out. He attacked the course MIUIIWJ - Thuri on the second run the samp way he had during the first.'! And he almost pulled it off. Then, three gates before J the finish, Lawson ran into -trouble, He hooked the gate ; with his arm, had trouble ' getting back onto the course, and eventually finished well back in the pack. The mis-take mis-take cost him the race and the overall title. He eventual-. ' ly finished fourth, behind ' California's Kyle Rasmus- sen. ; "If they had taken the best ' two out of three, Jason would ' have won," Marsh observed. "But the Steady Eddy was . the one who won it." Lawson was not the only ' Park City skier to make an impression at Mt. Bachelor. Nicki Koch was second in both the slalom and the giant slalom, after starting with a disappointing 21st in the downhill. She finished third in the combined point standings. stand-ings. . The class of the competition competi-tion was California's Kristi , Terzian, who finished with a ' race point total of 0.00. She won all three races she entered en-tered by margins ranging as high as seven seconds. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise for the Park City coaching staff was the performance per-formance of Greg Tesoro, who was almost left off the Intermountain team. Tesoro finished ninth in the slalom out of a field of almost 70. "He's a little tiny guy who weighs about 85 pounds," Marsh pointed out. "But he went out there and kicked everybody's butt. He beat everybody who was ahead of him on the selection board." Right behind Tesoro in the slalom was another Park City skier, Spence Eccles. "All the kids from Park City did as well, if not better, than what I expected," Marsh said. Andrea Peterson, who hit her stride during the Inter SALOMON mediate Championships held two weeks ago in Park City, took fourth place in the slalom sla-lom after failing to finish the giant slalom the day before. Erin Calmes was one of the most consistent Park City performers. She was 10th in the downhill, with the best time of any of the women from the Intermountain Division, then took 17th in the giant slalom and 12th in Erin Calmes shown during thp slalom- Jenny Lewis also finished with a flourish, picking up a 17th in the slalom after taking tak-ing 31st in the downhill and 35th in the giant slalom. And she skied every race with a pulled muscle, incurred during dur-ing practice earlier in the week. "All in all I'm very pleased with the kids' performance," Marsh said.
