A Classic Recommended Good Double feature material Time-Killer Formasochists only k The Stunt Man "The Stuntman" is not just off the beaten path ; it has attained at-tained escape velocity. The story is about a shaken, embittered Viet Nam veteran named Cameron (Steve Railsback) on the run for some unnamed crime, who stumbles into a movie set right after their ace stuntman has died doing a car crash into water for director Eli Cross, a flamboyantly flam-boyantly philosophical movie man filming a World War I picture. Cameron is hired to replace the dead man, and as he is plunged into in-to one insane action sequence after another, he becomes convinced that Cross is trying to kill him, and probably killed the first stuntman. On the other hand, he doesn't really know for sure that the first man died. Is Cross out to get him personally? The movie's about reality and illusion, inside the movies and out; trust and paranoia; simulated life and real death, and versa visa. All these transparent layers are used to refract the picture's pic-ture's biting wit, off-key dramatic confrontations, and a furious pace set by director Richard Rush that makes sitting through the picture something like running run-ning river rapids. I don't know if the above rating means anything, because the picture is so erratically original, it may be only fit for judgment on a very personal level. The first time I saw it, feeling tired and run-out, I thought the film a flashy, but empty display of ideas. When I revisited the picture on a better day, it became fascinating and bountifully profound. I suppose your reaction to anything is partly based on what Ebenezer Scrooge called "an undigested un-digested bit of beef" but "The Stuntman" is an extreme ex-treme case. My advice: if at first you don't succumb to its wit, thought, or anything else try, try again. The picture reaches a neat balance in its pivotal figures. O'Toole as Eli Cross openly confesses his role as a manipulator of movie magic. ("Don't you know that King Kong v .s only 3 feet, 6 inches tall? He only came up to Fay Wray's bellybutton," he tells Cameron. "If God could do the tricks we can, He'd be a happy man.") At the other end of the spectrum is Chuck Bail as the stunt chief, who risks real deaths and injuries to stage fake ones, but pragmatically focuses on the simple rewards of the profession. ("Did you know a good falling horse can make more money in one (lay than a bank president does in a whole year?" i Between them is Cameron whose practical experience in Viet Nam has forged a despairing life-philosophy. HIS slogan is, "II you spec! to get home by Thanksgiving, Thanks-giving, you'd better figure the guy coming after ya is gonna kill ya." O'Toole spends a lot of time "coming at" him. and trying to prove that what he figures isn't always true. Cameron is like the tourists who gather round to watch a lake bombing attack, then shriek as the smoke clears to reveal a field of bloody, dismembered corpses. Their initial assumption - that something went wrong with the props is deflated when the half-buried "mangled corpses" climb out of the ground sale and sound. If Cameron is ready to believe the worst, that is what he gets. The war scenes Cross gives him are parodies of his nightmarish war experiences. ex-periences. WWI bi planes crash head-first into the ground like dead pigeons. A tank pursues him through streets of a fake French village, no n c h a 1 a n 1 1 y crashing through papier-mache papier-mache buildings after him. And, as in a dream, he is j j At the Resort alone, chased alter by litcrnllv !,niulcN ul German Ger-man soldiers, concerned with nothing else short of catching him under their bayonets. Cameron himself is not everything he appears to be. He's a 'Nam veteran, with all the cliched assumptions that entails, and Steve Railsback plays him with the same cra.y quaver in his voice that he used when he portrayed Charles Manson on TV's "Heller Skelter." His horrible crime, it turns out. was hitting a policeman with a gallon of ice cream and leaving the cop's head in it. The antagonism between Eli, the anti-war director, and Cameron the ox-O.J. ultimately dissolves into laughter. Conversely. Cross' friendships are maintained with acts of callousness and cruelty. In order to get the proper distraught emotion out of leading lady Barbara llershey in a close-up. he tells her he accidentally showed her nude scene to her visiting parents during the daily rushes, lake all the other oppoMtos in this movie, a ha.y line divides hatred and warmth. O'Toole is given God like qualities, but has little con Restaurant Seafood Beef Oyster Bar Set Sail For Park City's Finest Restaurant SERVING DINNER NIGHTLY FROM 6:00 tiol himself over the vvay the world turns. His perceptions change. The script that seems magical and poignant one day is garbage the next. His filming can be destroyed by a fumble, or the mistake of an assistant director. But his real business isn't making movies. You can't imagine a serious film being made from the cra.y footage he shoots. No, O'Toole is primarily playing at challenging the perceptions of everyone around him, including in-cluding himself but especially including Cameron. "I care about what that young man thinks." says O'Toole. '"Bullshit,"1 ' retorts his w liter. "True! " he shrugs. 'The Stuntman" features thrilling stunt work, an ex cellent script by Lawrence Marcus, and three extraordinary extraor-dinary performances from Peter O'Toole, Steve Rails-back Rails-back and Barbara Hershey. Most of all. its fundameii tai appeal is the way it mixes philosophical complexity a ith a lack of pretension. It juggles truth and reality, liul. says the juggler with a .-.! wink, who's to say that I'm real'.' 649-7778 I eii f i NOTICE OF TRUSTEE SALE The following described real property will be sold at public auction to the highest bidder at the front steps of Summit County Courthouse in Coalville County of Summit, Utah, on December 15, lilSII at 1(1:011 a.m. o'clock of said day: All of Lot 54.
