The six were flown to West Germany after Canada unexpectedly closed its embassy in Iran and withdrew its small , staff,, harboring the American under false Canadian passports. Iranian Foreign "Minister Sadegh Ghotbzadeh responded angrily ;to the ruse, calling it a "flagrant violation'', , of , .international law. He warned the hostages still in captivity likely would be treated more harshly, but no word of tougher conditions has been released. On Sunday, Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the ruling Revolutionary Council agreed to set up an international commission to consider alleged crimes of deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. It is hoped the commission com-mission will help gain the release of the 50 hostages, now in their 96th day of captivity. Establishment of the commission was proposed by U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, who will select members, including Iranian and other foreign representatives. It has not been determined when the commission will go to Iran or when the hearings will begin. New Delhi, India Seventeen people riding on top of an overcrowded train died Monday after hitting a low bridge 300 miles northeast of Calcutta. Railway officials found eight bodies and two seriously injured people who later died, still on the roof of the train. Seven other bodies were found along the railroad tracks. Officials said it is not uncommon for Indian trains to be filled to capacity, and passengers often ride on the coach roofs or cling to the sides. Amsterdam, Netherlands Seventy-year-old Queen Juliana announced the abdication of her throne last week after 31 years in power. The surprise announcement was made on national television, t where the queen said her powers are fading with age;1 She officially will step dowa on her 71st birthday, April 30, and will be sujceded by her 42-year-old daughter, Crotyn Princess Beatrix. The queen, best loved for her informal style, was crowned after her mother, Queen Wilhelmina, abdicated Sept. 4 1948, at the age of 68, after 50 years on the throne. Christchurch, New Zealand A Salt Lake City man and an unidentified partner were killed Saturday while climbing Mount Cook west of Christchurch. The Utahn was identified as 38-year-old John W. Gottman of 1074 E. 600 South. The pair apparently ap-parently were near the summit when they slipped slip-ped and fell to their deaths. Authorities located the bodies in an aerial search, but said the area is too hazardous to attempt a recovery. Gottman was a member of a month-long New Zealand climbing expedition sponsored by the Iowa Mountaineering Club. He was a senior proposal analyst for Sperry-Univac Co. Tehran Abolhassan Bani Sadr became Iran's first president Monday night when ailing Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini swore him in before a television audience from his Tehran hospital bed. The Ayatollah suffered a mild heart attack recently. The 46-year-old president pledged to work to rid the country of centuries of corruption caused by successive monarchies. He concurred with Khomeini, who vehemently condemned the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan and swore "unconditional support" for the Moslem Afghan rebels. Khomeini's open support for Bani Sadr should give the new president tremendous political strength during his four-year term. As Iran's foreign minister last fall, Bani Sadr showed a more conservative approach to the American hostage crisis than his successor, Sadegh Ghotbzadeh. Ghot-bzadeh. Election of a parliament, expected within a month, will complete the transfer of power from deposed Shah Mohammad Raza Pahlavi. NATIONAL iTfY : Washington In the largest investigation of political corruption undertaken by the FBI, eight members of Congress have been implicated in a bribery scandal after 14 months of undercover work and an immigration and naturalization service investigator has been formally charged. The agents apparently posed as representatives represen-tatives of an Arab sheik offering bribes to gain a gambling casino license and other favors. At least 20 public officials and 10 lawyers and businessmen have been implicated, and FBI agents allegedly payed nearly $500,000 in bribes to the officials, although fewer than 10 actually took the money. Others arranged meetings or agreed to other favors . Charged with bribery and conspiracy was Alexander Alexandro, 29, of Commack, N.Y. In addition to state and local officials in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the top officials implicated include U.S. Sen. Harrison Williams, D-N.J. ; and U.S. Reps. John Murphy, D-N.Y.; Frank Thompson, Thom-pson, D-N.J.; Michael Myers, D-Pa.; Raymond Lederer, D-Pa.; John Jenrette, D-S.C; John Murtha, D-Pa.; and Richard Kelly, R-Fla. All denied any wrongdoing. FBI Director William Webster said special care was taken to avoid a plea of entrapment, a common risk in undercover investigations. Attorneys At-torneys must prove the law enforcement officer instigated the crime, and the defendant was not predisposed to participate. According to one agent, the FBI didn't first suggest the bribes. Originally, the FBI was not investigating political corruption, but was running a phony fencing operation for stolen art. stocks and bonds. Informants said lawyers who came to them brought in officials looking for bribes. As further protection against entrapment, the FBI videotaped some of the bribery transactions that took place in the cities of Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Miami and Newark, N.J. New York Jimmy Durante, one of show business' most beloved comics, died last week of pneumonia at the age of 86. Durante depended on his untiring good will and energy to bring laughs to millions for decades, poking fun at himself and his looks. His large nose became his trademark and won him the familiar nickname Schnozola or Schnozzle. Durante's raspy comments like "Don't raise da bridge boys, lower da river," or renditions of "Inka, Dinka, Do," became familiar party conversation. con-versation. Offstage, Durante was as popular as on. He lived in a modest eight-room home and was known to give huge amounts of money away to panhandlers. He disliked attending big parties and spent his free time at home talking with old vaudevillians or horse trainers, or playing the piano. In later years, he spent his time in a beach house in Del Mar, Calif., walking along the shore and surfcasting. He was born in 1893 in the slums of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. His father, a barber, encouraged him to play piano, in hopes he would become a concert artist. At 17, he was playing honky-tonk piano in Coney Island, where he met singing waiter Eddie Cantor. He married singer Jeanne Olson in 1921, and she died in 1943. A year later, he met hatcheck girl Marjorie Little, and after a 16-year courtship, married her in 1960 when he was 67 and she 39. She was at his side at his death. Durante established himself as a well-known comic in nightclubs on the Broadway stage, on radio, in 29 movies, and on television for six years in a half-hour, Saturday night show. St. Petersburg, Fla. Six men were found dead and the search for 17 crewmen missing after af-ter the collission of a Coast Guard cutter and an oil tanker was called off last week after rescuers vainly searched surrounding swamps for survivors. sur-vivors. Twenty-seven crewmen lived through the collission of the 180-foot Blackthorn and the 605-foot 605-foot oil tanker Capricorn. The Blackthorn sank in 50 feet of water. Six bodies have been recovered, with 17 men still missing. During an investigation into the accident, the lookout on the flying bridge of the Blackthorn said about eight seconds passed between the initial sighting of the tanker and the crash. Santa Monica, Calif. Jack Bailey, who for years offered women the chance to be "Queen for a Day", died of cancer last week at the age of 72. Bailey hosted the 20-year series from 1944 to 1964, crowning more than 5,000 queens. The popular show featured five women each day and Bailey encouraged them to tell why they wanted to be queen for the day. Bailey also worked for Walt Disney Studios, giving voice to "Goofy" in some cartoons and was an announcer for the "Duffy's Tavern" and "Ozzie and Harriet" radio shows. For three seasons he also hosted the nighttime version of "Truth or Consequences." A native of Hampton, Iowa, Bailey began his career with a dance orchestra while still in high school, worked as a barker at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, and staged and directed musical comedy shows in the midwest. He died Friday at a Santa Monica Hospital where he had been hospitalized for a month. His wife, Jean, was with him when he died. Santa Fe, N.M. Thirty-nine men were tortured tor-tured and murdered by fellow inmates during a 36-hour takeover of the New Mexico State Prison before National Guardsmen and a police SWAT team recaptured the building Sunday. Fifteen inmates were still missing Tuesday inside in-side the compound where fires still are burning. Guardsmen searching for the missing were physically sickened by the remains of inmates who had been beheaded or tortured with blowtorches, axes and metal rods. The execution squad was said to have been led by seven prisoners. Seven guards and 55 inmates were admitted to hospitals following the bloodbath, and 14 inmates were treated for drug overdoses. Guards apparently were making rounds of the cellblocks Saturday morning just after midnight when they were jumped by prisoners dressed in guards' uniforms wielding knives. Fifteen prison employees, most of them guards, were taken prisoner, though none were among the men murdered. The takeover ended quietly Sunday about 2 p.m. alter officials promised violence would not be used in regaining the penitentiary. Officials said it might cost more than $50 million to repair the maximum-security prison built to house 850 inmates. At the time of the riot, the worst in prison history since the Attica uprising in New York in 1971, there were 1,136 prisoners in the New Mexico penitentiary.
