Dr. Brent Skura, who plans to begin the project -Jr. next year, said beans are a high protein, cheap, : 1: ,' easy-to-grow food. But he noted that beans will Zzis never become universally popular unless some "Irl way can be found to limit the amount of gas tjHH generated by bean eating. "In certain individuals, gas formation can -Zz: cause a great deal of discomfart," Skura said, rssrs "There is also a social problem " S'H: Havana The Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty rSir and the Camp David talks that lead to it were "energetically" condemned Sunday as the non-aligned nations concluded their summit conference. The condemnation of the peace treaty was part of the final declaration by the conference. It came after six hours of debate and a closed - - all-night session by summit delegates. The declaration also included a wide-ranging attack of U.S. foreign policy. Salisbury, Zimbabwe Rhodesia Rhodesian forces pulled out of Mozambique Saturday, ending a four-day invasion that the military command said destroyed a score of major - targets and killed more than 300 Mozambican soldiers and patriotic front guerrillas. The invasion was the largest operation ever mounted by Zimbabwe Rhodesia in the . seven-year war against the guerrillas. Moscow A Soviet expedition into the Pamir Mountains has discovered a huge footprint the ' group believes was made by a Central Asian ,: . version of the Abominable Snowman, according :. to a Soviet newspaper. : . . The footprint measured 14 inches in length and was more than six inches in width ; " "" across the toes. A member of the expedition said the footprint is genuine and resembles samples taken of "Bigfoot," the American mystery creature believed to roam parts of the northwestern United States. Tokyo Mount Aso, the world's largest volcano and a spectacular tourist attraction, suddenly erupted last Thursday, killing three people and injurying 16 others. The volcano spewed a shower of rocks that pelted an unsuspecting group of sightseers. The dead were a middle-aged Tokyo couple and a honeymooning high school teacher, whose bride was badly hurt but survived. The crater of the 5,223-foot-high Mount Aso measures 17 miles north to south and 10 miles east to west. It has five cones but only Nakadake Peak remains active. Durban, South Africa Police launched an intensive search last Thursday for six marauding maraud-ing monkeys that tried to drag two children into the bush. The youths were playing on the porch of their surburban home when the monkeys grabbed jjfj them. "I heard the children screaming and crying and :.:H I rushed to see what the matter was," Mrs. H H Deborah Grayling said. "Each of my sons was !' J- being dragged by a monkey on each arm. I ; J screamed at them but they continued to pull the H kids across the porch." n H The monkeys finally left the children, ages 3 5 2 and Vz, unharmed and ran into the bush. II NATIONAL I f Washington Following reports that the Soviet Union has 3,000 combat troops stationed in Cuba, fj Senator Henry Jackson said Tuesday Moscow is ? arming Cuba with weapons systems that could 1 pose "a major threat to our oil supplies." SV Jackson said the Soviets have given Cuba two submarines, including one that could mine U.S. 5 coastal waters, leading to the presumption that more attack submarines are anticipated. Meanwhile, the State Department Monday began negotiations with Soviet officials over the S S presence of Russian combat troops in Cuba. ; Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and Soviet ' Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin conferred for S 3 nearly two hours in the opening session behind ; H closed doors. Vance was quoted as saying he was rvr "going to be quite firm and insistent on getting ii vi some direct answers" from Dobryin. r.. Chicago Four Puerto Rican nationalists granted clemency by President Carter were released from prisons Monday and headed for a a rally in Chicagor All four spent at least a quarter of a century behind bars and none expressed any regret for their actions. Three of the nationalists were convicted in a 1954 shooting in the U.S. House of Representatives that left five congressmen wounded. The fourth was jailed four years earlier for attempting to assassinate President Harry Truman. "I have a great satisfaction. We have succeeded in our struggle for victory. We are stronger than ever, more committed than ever," said Lolita Lebron after emerging from the federal prison in Anderson, W. Va. All four said they would continue to seek independence for Puerto Rico. Atlanta The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reported Sunday that Senator Edward Kennedy considers President Carter a liability to fellow Democrats and has told him a fight for the party presidential nomination would likely elect a Republican. The newspapers said the suggestions that Carter step aside came at a private White House luncheon last Friday, just after Kennedy's office made it known that his family had withdrawn previous objections to his candidacy. In an interview published in the Boston Globe, Kennedy said a major factor in his decision concerning the Democratic nomination will be Carter's "ability to deal with the economy." : "I have not ruled out the possiblity of a candidacy," Kennedy said. ; Washington The nation's unemployment rate rose sharply in August to six percent, the highest level in more than a year. ' . Compounding widespread layoffs through the economy due to the new recession, wholesale prices jumped another 1.2 percent in August. Higher prices for fuel and food were the main contributors to the rise, the government said. Washington President Carter told Congress Tuesday defense spending needs to be increased nearly $5 billion in fiscal 1980 to close gaps caused by inflation and meet NATO security . pledges. Carter also said he intends to propose a further increase in defense spending in fiscal 1981. "Correcting for inflation is not enough in itself to assure that we continue an adequate, defense program," Carter said. "We must also have the program and the funds authorized and appropriated, substantially as they were submitted." 7-11 Appeal Denied The City Council last Thursday Thurs-day night denied 7-Eleven proponents an appeal of a Planning Commission decision deci-sion rejecting a new convenience con-venience store on Park Avenue. Representing 7-Eleven was Van Martin, a planner with J.J.Johnson Associates of Park City. Martin said he wished to "substantiate the claim that the decision of the Planning Commission was in error." Martin commented that plans for the store, to be located on the southwest corner of Park and Empire Avenues, were first initiated in November 1978. The plans were reviewed by the Planning Plan-ning Commission in May of 1979, with the decision to deny the conditional use permit rendered in June. Martin said the basis of the decision was the commission's commis-sion's belief that the location of the store would contribute significantly to existing traffic traf-fic and would create a hazardous condition for the residents of Park City. Martin then read from a letter written by city traffic consultant Wayne Van-Wagoner, Van-Wagoner, who noted that after evaluation he did not feel the store would add significantly to the existing traffic situation. The planner said the proponents pro-ponents had agreed to alter the site plan but the Planning Commission indicated it would not change its decision. deci-sion. Saying no further negotiation with the commission commis-sion was envisioned, Martin asked for a vote on the appeal. ; After discussing existing traffic problems and the effect of allowing the convenience con-venience store at the city's busiest intersection, the-council the-council voted unanimously to reject the appeal.; More Inspectors Rapid development in Park City this summer brought complaints from the citizenry citizen-ry that quality was being compromised for quantity, with fingers pointing to the building inspection department. depart-ment. Some residents appeared at city meetings to complain that poor workmanship in their new homes was suddenly sudden-ly surfacing after the developers dev-elopers were gone and the owners were moved in. Other residents flocked to a town meeting held in July to air their grievances. Most blamed inadequate city inspection in-spection of new development as the root of the problem. City Manager Wayne Matthews Mat-thews said Tuesday that since the problems have come to the attention of city officials, three additional building inspectors have been hired, swelling the ranks of that department from one to four. Until about six weeks ago, all building reviews were being conducted conduct-ed by chief building inspector inspect-or Bob Skanter. Matthews commented that it was impossible for Skanter to keep up with the ; vast number of new buildings, and three inspectors : were employed. Hired a month ago was Wayne Ragland, with Clifford Cole coming to Park City two weeks later. On Monday, Ernest Mutcher, a certified electrician,' was hired to make all electrical inspections in the city. Of the four, only Skanter is a certified certi-fied building inspector. "These men will be working full-time, year round inspecting in-specting buildings and sites in Park City," Matthews said. "This gives us very good coverage throughout the entire en-tire city and should answer some of the problems that were being aired at City Hall."
