Show t Thursday, July 26,1979 Page 11 Skier Visits And Dollars Up At Utah Ski Areas Reprinted From The Salt Lake Tribune Skier visits and skier dollars spent in Utah have shown a major increase in four years. While inflation accounts for a major part of the gain, there was real gain in both resident and non-resident skiing and spending in the state, according to a preliminary prelim-inary study by Dr. John D. Hunt, of Utah State University's Univer-sity's Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism. The study was done for the Utah Travel Council. Dr. Hunt emphasized the study is as yet incomplete because some factors have not yet been "plugged in." The study covers the 1978-79 1978-79 season. It follows one done for the 1974-75 season. Real Growth Dr. Hunt estimates residents spent $43,325,400 on skiing in Utah last season, nearly twice the $21,769,000 of the 1974-75 season. However, if one assumes annual inflation of 15 percent, per-cent, the real growth was 13.8 percent. However, it was clear Utah ski promotion efforts were getting results. Out-of-state skiers spent $18,931,400, nearly 125 per cent more than four years ago. With the 15 percent inflation in-flation factor cranked in, the real growth was 28.4 percent. per-cent. Dr. Hunt and associates interviewed more than 8,000 siers last season in 12 ski areas. Some 13,000 questionnairs were distributed and there were 1,100 replies. It received estimates of skier visits from all but one area. This, and the fact that some area reports did not include in-clude visits by season pass holders or other special ticket holders, meant that some of the report must be considered "only preliminary," prelimi-nary," says Dr. Hunt. He termed estimates "modestly conservative." , 2.1 Million Skier Days Utah ski areas reported about 2.1 million skier-day visits during the season, up 48.8 percent in four years. The gain in non-resident skier day visits was 404,900, up nearly 70 percent. Resident skier visits increased in-creased 284,100, up 34.2 percent. per-cent. Of all skier visits, nonresidents non-residents accounted for nearly 47 out of 100 visits compared to just over 41 of COUPON 100 four years ago. The local skier hiked his spending to $8.25 a visit during the season compared to $7.91 four seasons ago. At the same time, the nonresident non-resident (who turns to lodge and restaurant at day's end instead of home and hearth) hiked his daily spending to $169.80 compared to $127.59. The average stay for the out-of-stater was down to 6.2 days compared to 6.6 days in 74-75. Everyone was skiing more frequently. The Utah skier average 22.6 ski trips compared to 21.6 four seasons ago. The out-of-state skier who generally includes one or more days in a 'visit" averaged 2.8 visits 'compared to 2.1 four seasons ago. Did that mean the Chicagoan or Californian was taking two and three skier vacations in Utah? Not necessarily, Dr. Hunt told The Tribune. Best guess is that the major factor in the increase is out-of-state visits per skier is increased use Utah ski areas particularly par-ticularly Beaver Mountain east of Logan by residents of southeast Idaho and southwest Wyoming. ttif PARK CITY ?u Ski Area July 28 & 29 Continuous Show 12noon-10p.m. Co-sponsored by Kimball Art Center &Shupe Enterprises FEATURING: McLain Family Band Bryan Bowers Summer Dog Bittercreek -Oeseret String Band and Others PARK CITY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL, per person for each general admission ticket purchased at the gate only.
