VJ tf ., f i f i ' . :1 tftr ' i , - Rodeo Reps From across the nation some 52 young acrosport, tumbling and trampoline athletes, aged five to 18, have converged in Park City for a week-long United States Trampoline and Tumbling Association (USTA) summer camp. "The Park City camp is the first time the USTA has held their camp in the West," said Terry Ellis, executive secretary of USTA. "Tumbling and trampoline sports were once dominated by Indiana, Ohio and Iowa but in the last three years there has been a westward movement of the sports, particularly to Utah." Ellis, from Roy, Utah, has served as coach for several Utah tumbling athletes, including in-cluding the number two U.S. tumbling team of 1079. She is also coach to Julie Beaty, an attendant of the Park City USTA camp and one of two girls both Utahns representing repre-senting the United States at the International Tumbling Friendship Cup in Bulgaria. The USTA camp coaching staff of six reads like Who's Who of American tumbling and trampoline coaches, including: in-cluding: Rick Kley, present coach of the Southern Nevada Saltos; Don Buell, a Salt Laker who coached this year's top U.S. double-mini tramp team; Don Zasadny, national trampoline and double-mini tramp champion; cham-pion; Clark Gangwish, national tumbling coach of the year and coach to the winning AAU Jr. Olympic team of 1977; John Novack, a pyramid and acrosports instructor; in-structor; and Sherry Totaro, who trained and performed with the San Francisco Ballet. Exercise sessions for camp students are conducted conduc-ted in the Memorial Building gymnasium. Each session lasts three hours and includes in-cludes training in strip mat tumbling, platform tumbling, tum-bling, acrobatics, double-mini double-mini tramp and ballet. Student skill levels range from the beginner to those capable of double back flips from a floor mat. Acrobatic sports are not only new to the West but to the whole United States. Said Coach Zasadny: "It's only been in the last five years that acrobatics have caught on in the U.S. but already we are competing on the international level with European nations, where the sports have long been popular." Three Summit County high school students will represent Utah in national high school championship competition July 29 through August 5 in Fargo, North Dakota. The three won the honor by winning in their respective specialties at the state finals in Heber City last month. Gena Blonquist, of Coalville, a 1979 graduate of North Summit High School will compete in breakaway roping as well as vie for the crown. Summit head Miss Rodeo Blonquist, North High School's cheerleader last year, was crowned Miss High School Rodeo Utah at the Heber finals. De Loy Bisel, of Woodland, a graduate of South Summit High took first in bullriding in the Heber rodeo and will compete in that event in the nationals. Neal Gines, of Kamas, a senior at South Summit High, will compete in his specialty of steer wrestling.
