Show Thursday, April 19, 1979 Page 13 ini-Art Class Teachers By Bitsy Salomon In recent weeks, the co ordinators of Marsac School's upcoming Festival of the Arts, have sought to recognize and thank contributors, con-tributors, parent instructors, instruc-tors, teacher instructors, profesional instructors and the Senior Citizens. There is however, a final group of instructors in-structors for our four mini-art mini-art classes, which fall into two categories: avid, artistic ar-tistic hobbyists and part-time part-time professionals. Debbie Foss Nielsen exemplifies the latter description perfectly. She is currently teaching "Calligraphy" at Marsac. She has used her talent in calligraphy on a professional basis but now chooses to be a full-time parent. She initiated her own calligraphy business in 1974 by starting with menus. Since that time, she has designed menus for the Eating Establishment, Adolph's Steak House, The Red Banjo, The 2 Seasons originally located at the golf course, The Mother Lode and recently for the Park City Yacht Club. At Marsac, she enjoys her small art class "because kids seem so much more spontaneously creative than adults," states Debbie. Yet her creativity is a fine example for them. Dusty Orrell is also a part-time professional artist. ar-tist. As a youth, he was interested in-terested in drawing. He maintained his love for drawing and recently designed the 1978-79 cover of the Lodestar. Prior to this, he contributed many articles ar-ticles to our local newspapers. In his drawing class at Marsac, he ended up with a class composed solely of boys. Dusty feels great about teaching his pupils each week since they are "so full of energy." He added, "It's good to be around them". His class received added impetus with their outdoor drawing experience, under Dusty's guidaiM1 . Bonnie Peretti 1 classifies herself in the artistic hobbyist hob-byist category. At Marsac, her class is called ! Ten years ago in Montana, Bonnie took macrame during her evenings at the University of Montana. She kept up her hobby for a decade. While working full-time in a local real estate office, Bonnie still takes time to teach her course at school for the second consecutive year. She says, "The enthusiasm this year is even stronger than last year. They enjoy having a goal since they get to take their project home at the Festival." We are grateful that Bonnie is so eager to share her enthusiasm en-thusiasm with elementary students. Sandy Wright is a part-time part-time professional who teaches "Leather" at Marsac. Mar-sac. She began her leather-work leather-work career in 1962, when she took a high school art course introducing her to the craft. For the next ten years she created belts, wallets and similar items selling them on her own. She uses the Western Style which she feels is the hardest hard-est style. Now she teaches leatherwork in her own home in Wanship to students of any age, children and adults alike. In fact, teaching private lessons is a sideline now since Sandy still sells some of her own work. If anyone is interested in her leather classes, call her at 336-2677. After asking Sandy why she volunteered to teach at Marsac she said, "Because it is important for children to use their hands and accomplish something. Often they believe they can't draw or do some other art but they always enjoy working with leather and as a result find success." Sandy San-dy says she feels fortunate to have had the Tandy Leather Co. of Salt Lake City donate leather scraps and the use of their tools, for her class at Marsac. Her background in desgign began as a teenager wheo she won a sewing contest' con-test' and a trip to Europe. For the following six years she modeled for Seventeen Magazine. Then they found out she sewed so they asked her to travel around the U.S. promoting clothing, some of which she herself designed. She developed this show herself which entailed working with media, public relations and schools and setting up seminars. Since beginning with McCall's Pattern Company and Seventeen Magazine in New York she has submitted many designs. They have been published in such 'magazines as Family Circle, Cir-cle, Better Homes and Gardens Gar-dens and more. Her designs include children's toys, women's clothes and soft sculpture. Her free lance work began after she started star-ted a family. She works for fabric firms in San Francisco Fran-cisco and New York. She also designed her largest soft sculpture exhibit in a Christmas window of a Salt Lake design company. After learning so much about Tina's extensive background she was asked how she finds time to volunteer volun-teer at Marsac by teaching her course, "Soft Sculpture." Sculp-ture." She said, "I always make time for Marsac because I have as much fun as they do." Her class first talked about three dimensions, dimen-sions, a new concept to most of them. Some grasped the concept readily and advanced. ad-vanced. She went on to say, "It is wonderful to see pupils move from this concept, to drawing a pattern, choosing fabric, cutting the pattern into its proper pieces and stuffing and embellishing their creation with detail." It is much more than a sewing class. Tina's also encouraged to find that both boys and girls signed up for her class.
