And though there have been colder winters in the past fifty years, this one has managed to break a few records. According to National Weather Service meteorologist meteorol-ogist Keith Goates, January's Janu-ary's nose numbing cold was not the worst felt in the Salt Lake Valley, until the 30th when the -6 registered broke the coldest temperature recorded re-corded on that date in over 20 years three degrees in 1951. The following day the mercury dropped even lower to a -8, six degrees colder ihan was recorded in 1957. This January ties for third place for the longest string of days below 32 degres in the last 50 years. For fifteen days beginning January 22 to February 5 the temperatures were literally freezing, a record exceeded by an 18-day string from January 23 to February 9 in 1949. A look at the daily snow condition reports at the Park City resort shows that in January of this year there were but seven days that sported clear skies and eleven days where the temperatures temp-eratures never rose above 10 degrees. That compares to two full weeks of sunshine last January, with only two days that the mercury didn't top 10 degrees. The coldest day registered in January 1978 was three degrees, compared to a -12 this year. Despite the cold, more skiers than ever are on the Park City slopes. And the slopes they're skiing on are packed with the same WEEKDAY PROGRAMS 5:50 2 Early Farm Watch 5:55 5 Farm News 6:00 2 Music Shop 4 Good Morning America 5 CBS News 7 MacNeilLehrer Report 6:30 2 Flintstones 7 Dick Cavett 7:00 2 Today 4 Hotel Balderdash 5 Captain Kangaroo 7 Sesame Street 8:00 4 Good Morning America 5 Romper Room 7 Over Easy 8:30 5 Price is Right 9:00 2 High Rollers 4 Happy Days 7 Electric Company 9:30 2 Wheel of Fortune 4 Phil Donahue 5 Love of Life 9:55 5 CBS News 10:00 2 Jeopardy! 5 Young and the Restless 7 Sesame Street 10:30 2 Password 4 Ryan's Hope 5 All In The Family 11:00 2 Hollywood Squares 4 All My Children - 5 As The World Turns 11:30 2 Card Sharks 12:00 2 Newcwatch 5 Eyewitness News 7 , Infinity Factory 12:25 2 Consumer Action Report 5 Face To Face 12:30 2 Joker's Wild 5 Guiding Light 7 Villa Alegre 1:00 2 Another World 4 General Hospital 1-30 5 MASH 2:00 2 Days of our Lives 4 Edge of Nighi 5 Movie 2:30 4 Family Feud 3:00 2 Emergency One! 4 $20,000 Pyramid 7 Lilias. January 1, 1978 saw 25 inches of snow at the base of the mountain, 37 inches at the Summit, and 75 inches at Jupiter. Thirty days later, thirteen inches had been added to the lower parts of the mountain, while Jupiter Bowl grew deeper by 28 inches. The first day of January this year opened with a :S2-inch :S2-inch base, 41 inches at the Summit, and 55 inches at Jupiter, and the month closed with the same depths as was recorded one year earlier: 41 inches at the base, 50 inches at the Summit, and 103 inches at Jupiter. Goates remarked that the 13.9 inches of snow that fell in Salt Lake City was about normal for a January, while the 8.7 inches in December was a little below normal. The water content of the snow this year is substantially substantial-ly below normal because of the cold, while last year's relatively warm weather brought more than average raining and less snow to the valley... A climatic summary for January the past two years shows 1978 temperatures were 8.3 degrees above normal, while 1979 was 3.3 below, making last month closer to normal than last season. But what's in store? A very general outlook from the meteorological center in Washington, DC. predicts Rocky Mountain region temperatures will be near or slightly below normal in February, with precipitation also slightly below normal. In its formative years, the Arts Festival was organized by local merchants, then the Park City Arts Foundation, and in the past few years,' the Chamber of Commerce. This year, the mushrooming art event will be jointly sponsored by the Kimball Art Center and the Park City Arts Council, under the direction of Kimball Art Guild president Tina Lewis. "The Chamber of Commerce Com-merce felt it should develop an event until it is a reasonably lucrative feature for the community, and then turn it over to an organization that would benefit by the experience and lend its expertise to promote the growth of the festival," said chamber director Amanda Peterson. "The big draw to this year's festival will be the Tina touch. Under her direction, the event will take on a whole new dimension, which it needs every year. She has a strong committee behind her and she has the public relations skills that are so important to promote it. 7:30 Superfriends Electric Company Sesame Street Daffy Duck Tarzan Fred And Barney Fangface M.ster Rogers Jetsons Pink Panther Once Upon A Classic Buford Weekend Special Space Academy Cinematic Eye Fabulous Funnies American Bandstand Fat Albert Movie Documentary Two's Company Ark II Go! Plans for this year's festival already are being formulated, and the new sponsors are in the process of applying for a $20,000 grant from the Utah Council of the Arts. Any grant money received will be used as seed money for furture Arts Festivals. "The Arts Festival is now at a level where it can qualify for funding," said Mrs. Peterson. "Right now there are no basic dollars, but a solid, national reputation." Mrs. Lewis noted that this year's event will open with a bluegrass festival the last weekend in July, with the following week filled with workshops and performances, performan-ces, culminating in the weekend exhibitor days starting August 3. "Last year was our education that the Arts Festival is truly a national festival," said Mrs. Lewis. "That event was a little difficult dif-ficult because the directorship director-ship was split five ways and was not as cohesive as it could be. It has become such a huge undertaking that it really is a full time job." Mrs. Lewis has been hired as the director for the seven months preceding the festival, and will work closely with the Arts Festival executive committee, commit-tee, which is a five-member board with representatives from the business and art community. "People from all over the country "come to Park' City to be part of the Arts Festival," Mrs. Lewis remarked. "It's very exciting, ex-citing, and I look forward to being part of it, too."
