Show Wendover At Home Despite its humble beginnings, begin-nings, the Park High basketball team is making its presence felt in Region Eleven competition. After losing its first nine games of the season and floundering with a disappointing disap-pointing 1-10 record, the Miners have won two in a row two' big ones. Following its upset victory over St. Joseph, the previous week, Park City defeated Wendover last Friday night before an appreciative ap-preciative home court crowd. "It was, without a doubt, our best game and the most gratifying win of the season," coach Bruce Reid said of his team's surprising 63-55 triumph over the Wendover Wen-dover Wildcats. As was the case in the St. Joseph win, it was defensive hustle and offensive patience patien-ce that was the key to success. suc-cess. The Miners' full court press took away Wendover's fast break, which has been a big weapon for them all season, and forced them into in-to mistakes. Although the Miners led for almost the entire contest, con-test, Wendover kept coming back and poor foul shooting in the final period almost cost Park City the victory. Small Lineup Coach Reid has the capability of starting one of the tallest 1-A lineups in the state, but once again he relied on his smaller players, mostly underclassmen, under-classmen, to, do the job. Taking the court at the opening whistle were: 57". junior Mark Uriarte; 5'8'' junior-Mickey Henrion; 5'8" junior Barney Murnin; 5'H" senior Tim King and 6'4" - ,-, i ' ' , ' " ' 3-vw - , , I I '' ''. mm "' I K' I - " ' ' . On offense, of-fense, the Miners moved the ball well, feeding Cowin inside in-side or taking the open jump shot from the perimeter. Cowin worked effectively against Wildcat star Rob Spillman, and tallied 15 points on the night. The high-scoring Spillman managed 18 points, but ten of those came on foul shots as Park City did almost everything possible without weapons to prevent him from getting to the hoop. The Miners held a 19-11 lead with 36 seconds left in the first quarter but Spillman hit on a three-point play to cut the lead to five. Murnin responded with two foul shots and Park City was up by seven at the end of the period. Except for Henrion, Park City started an entirely new team in the second quarter. A much taller lineup of Howard Davidson, Walter Hagmann, Mike Gebauer and Scott Evans took the floor and the swarming full court press changed to a half court press. Scott Evans shoots over Against St. Joseph, the taller lineup and the half court press proved more effective ef-fective but this was not the case last Friday night. Ahead 27-16, Park City saw the Wildcats pull to within two, 29-27. With Uriarte in for Evans, Cowin in for Hagmann and Dave Radford in for Henrion, the Miners stretched stret-ched their margin back to five. But the Wildcats again si '? . , ' - i Surprise charged back. A Spillman foul shot made it 34-32 and Wendover sunk the tying basket only to have it nullified by a traveling violation. Wildcat David Howlett hit on a foul shot seconds later and Park City went into the intermission with a slim 34-33 advantage Cowin Hot Going back to what worked best, Reid reinserted reinser-ted his first quarter lineup and again employed a full court press. Although the third quarter turned out to be a low scoring period, Cowin got things rolling for Park City by scoring the first six points. poin-ts. Down by seven. Wendover Wen-dover pulled to within three with less than three minutes left in the quarter. A Henrion jump shot then was answered by Wildcat George Cloward. With the Miners still ahead by only three, Uriarte stole the ball, drove for a layup and missed but Mike Gebauer followed the shot to push the advantage to five. Regaining possession after af-ter Wendover failed to score, Park City went for the final shot but Tim King's effort was blocked by Shane Bostock and the quarter ended en-ded 47-42. a Wendover defender. Spillman Fouls Out Park City stuck to its full court press in the final period with Gebauer playing for Cowin. Wendover's Rocky Brown connected on two foul shots at the start of the fourth quarter and Gebauer then hit on a turnaround jump shot to maintain the five-point lead. But the next four points belonged to the Wildcats and again Park Page 5 City's lead was trimmed to one. With six minutes left in the game and Wendover threatening to overtake the Miners, Spillman committed his fifth foul and went to the bench. With the big man out of action. Park City went to work underneath and Stacy Delaney, who shifted into Spillman's defensive position, departed soon thereafter. "When Spillman went out the game was over," Reid observed. Park City began to dominate play but their poor foul shooting kept Wendover in the game. Missing numerous front ends of one-and-one bonus situations, the Miners were unable to capitalize on the Wildcats' weaker bench until the close of the game. With only 44 seconds left, a three-point play by Bostock brought Wendover within one, 56-55. but they were the last points of the game for the Wildcats. From then on it was a Park City parade to the foul line and the Miners secured their second big win in as many games. Good and Bad Although their overall record is a not-so-impressive 3-10, Park City's league record in Division II of Region Eleven is 3-2, good for third place. And with Tintic and Utah School for the Deaf as their next two , opponents, the Miners should be 5-2 going into their showdown with Dugway on February 16.
