But most find out it is not all that easy. To improve your uphill skiing, just put "your best foot forward." Concentrate on thrusting the gliding glid-ing ski far ahead of you so that your foot is ahead of your knee as in the photo. This helps keep your kick under you, not in back of you where it may cause you to slip. , Thrusting your foot forward will help you achieve success on the uphills. m ill ( ... In a dramatic strategy switch, Park City coach Bruce Reid started a "small lineup" consisting of Mark Uriarte, Barney Murnin, Mickey Henrion, Marty Cowin and Tim King and employed a full court press throughout the entire first quarter. Reid admitted that the fu!! court press did not accomplish accom-plish the turnovers he had hoped for, but he noted that the tactic "set the tempo for the game." The turnovers did come in the second quarter, though. Except for Uriarte, who played the entire game, the starting team in the second period was entirely different. dif-ferent. With Howard David son, Mike Gebauer, Mark Evans and Dave Radford on the floor, Park City went to a half court press that caused havoc with St. Joseph's offense. With the din of the home court crowd overshadowing a sizeable Park City turnout, tur-nout, the Miners created numerous turnovers and mtjmmmmmmmmmmjMmmmmmmmmmmmmMmmmmtmmmmm f k ' , Si High scorer Mike Gebauer Although the ' press was not extremely effective, the Miners did play well under their own basket and defense defen-se kept them in the game despite the absence of their big scorers. With niether team able to get the clean shots, the period ended with t. Joseph ..holding . an 8-6 "lot? i escaped with several steals, steals. But offensively, only Gebauer could find the range. The 6'3" sophomore accounted for seven of Park City's nine second period points and the Miners trailed 17-15 at the half. In marked contrast to previous performances this. season, the Miners surged in the third quarter, again led by Gebauer. Down by two at the intermission, Park City outscored St. Joseph 14 to 6 in the third period to take a 29-23 lead. The only change to tiie second period lineup was the insertion of 67" Walter Hagmann for Evans. Although Hagmann failed to score, he created defensive problems for St. Joseph that allowed Gebauer to free himself for high percentage shots. Gebauer continued to have the hot hand in the third quarter, connecting for nine more points. While the offense was cranking up, the Miner half court press remained unrelenting and Park City registered 19 steals in the game. In the final period, Reid returned to his "small" lineup and St. Joseph erased the Park City lead. They scored seven straight points to go ahead 30-29 and Reid put Davidson and Gebauer back on the court. St. Joseph tallied their ninth unanswered point but Davidson hit on a jumper to make it 32-31. Uriarte then stole the ball on a half court press and Park City worked the ball into Gebauer, who gave them a 33-32 lead. The Miners fouled and two charity tosses put St. Joseph ahead. Reid then called a time out with 52 seconds left in the game and told the Miners to. work the ball inside in-side Gebauer. Park City worked the ball for 30 seconds, but it was Tim King, not Gebauer, that scored the basket. Positioned on the weak side, King took a pass and found the baseline open for a layup, putting Park City ahead 35-34 in the seesaw battle. bat-tle. With 16 seconds left, St. Joseph called time out. When play resumed they tried to get the ball inside to normally high scoring Bob Hyiand on a lob pass. But when Hyiand, who only had six points on the night, came down with the ball, he was stripped clean by King and Davidson recovered the , loose ball. Davidson was fouled on the play. He failed to make the free throw but time expired ex-pired before St. Joseph had a chance to take another shot. Looking at the scorebook wouldn't tell you so, but the play of point guard Mark Uriarte was a key factor in the Miner victory. "Cocoa" did not score a point but he had eight assists and committed com-mitted only one turnover as Park City's major ball handler. han-dler. "Cocoa played the best game I've ever seen for someone who didn't score a point," Reid said after the game. But the coach also had praise for the team as a whole. "There was a marked difference dif-ference in our play," he said. "We played a team game and everyone did an excellent job." The Miners will host powerful Wendover this Friday at 7 : 15 and local fans will have a chance to view the talents of Rob Spillman, described by Reid as "the best l-A player in the state."
