The Alamo Bums, always talented but never titlists, ended long years of frustration Monday night by thrashing the Mad Jacks to win the men's softball league championship. The Bums beat the Mad Jacks 11-2 to take the best-of-three series in two straight. contributing factor to their eventual championship. A victory over Spencer's was a treat never before savored by the perennial also-rans. The second game was equally as close, with Spencer's Spen-cer's registering a 15-14 win to tie the series. The no-tomorrow contest resulted in a surprisingly easy 11-3 triumph for the Alamo. They jumped to a 4-0 Uncle Kunkel connects. Photo by Wasatch Monday's win marked the third time the Bums had beaten the Jacks in postseason post-season play. The two teams tied for first place in Division I at the end of the regular season and had to play an extra game Friday to determine the division winner. The Jacks took an early lead in the contest but the Bums fought back to post a 13-12 victory in nine innings. in-nings. As division winners, the Bums met the second place Division II entrant in a best-of-three play off. Their opponent op-ponent was their old nemesis, Spencer's Auto. Spencer's, who blasted the Big Shots 32-2 in first round single elimination play, had never lost to the Alamo. But the first game went to the Bums in a 14-13 squeeker. This win could have been the biggest single lead in the second and never trailed. After losing to the Bums for the division title, the Mad Jacks faced Mt. Realty in the single elimination first round. They pounded out a 15-10 win which allowed them to tangle with the heavy hitting Brothers squad, the Division II leaders. Based on late season performance per-formance and their dominance of Division II. which many observers felt to be the stronger of the two circuits, the Brothers were favored to take the league championship. They did nothing to dispell that belief in the first game of the series, taking a hard fought 13-12 win. But the Mad Jacks bounced back to win two straight and go into the final series. Pat Brennan then doubled off second baseman Frank Marcellin's glove, scoring Shultz. Craig Kunkel singled to left, driving in a run, and took second on the throw home. He then scored on Stan Cordova's single to left but Cordova was thrown out trying to stretch his hit to a double. With three runs already across the plate, Scott "Fat-back" "Fat-back" Richards sent a liner to left field. The ball skipped by Marty Loftquist and Richards trotted around the bases with the fourth run of The Bums failed to score in the fifth but the Mad Jacks did manage to register their only two runs of the game. Johnny Carpenter and Dennis Den-nis Hulbert singled and Bill Lewis then dribbled the ball back to the pitcher, forcing Hulbert at second. With men on first and third, Dennis Lance hit to right driving in both Carpenter and Lewis. In the top of the sixth. Peets doubled and went to third on Brennan's sacrifice. After Kunkel lined out to Buzzy Johnson at first on a good catch, hard hitting Cordova came to bat. The shortstop took a mighty swing and an intentional whiff, causing catcher Lewis to miss the ball. Peets raced for home in an attempted steal. Lewis put the tag on but then dropped the ball and Peets, who had missed tin-plate, tin-plate, dove back head first for the Bums' tenth run oi the game I I I I i Cm QOCT CHAMPIONSHIP Sat.
