Wasatch, the dog, and David Hillman, the owner, took advantage of a small field and some reluctant competition to capture the Gaines Catch-and-Fetch contest held at City Park Saturday afternoon. With Hillman throwing frisbees from within a 12-foot circle, Wasatch made more catches than any of the other entrants to take first prize. Leaping high for the two-point two-point catches and chalking up one-point still-on-thc- City Park, located behind the 7-11 store on Park Avenue, is not the place to take an idle stroll this summer, nor is it the place to snooze in the shade at lunch break. City Park has become, under Bruce Henderson's and Marilyn Rivas' direction, a vibrant center for several recreational programs. On any given morning the Day Camp can be found warming up with a game of softball before heading out on daily excursions which include craft classes at the Kimball Art Center, rollerskating in Salt Lake City, hikes and scavenger hunts. Last summer Marilyn took over diretion of the Day Camp from Lauri Hale. She has expanded the program to take advantage of the growing recreational facilities in Park City with the help of counselors Linda Buyer, Robin by Ulhasporb - 6 Daily Sunday 12-6 ground snatches, Wasatch's persistence provided the winning margin. Israel, entered by Tim Lee showed the most form and potential, making two spectacular catches. But Israel also showed disdain for repeat performances and he sulked under a picnic bench as Lee pleaded with him to strut his stuff. The threats and cajoling were to no avail, however, and Israel took second place. Third place in the three-dog-one-man field went to Scott Smith's German shepherd Bo, while Petey, 7W - - r If " ' x? Ms. Estes fan the tennis program f in Laguna Beach, California before moving to Park City. This summer she offers three four-week instruction sessions, the next of which begins July 11 and 12. Classes are limited to seven students and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Later in the day the park is Bruce Henderson's coaching grounds for the growing youth soccer program. The soccer camp doubled in attendance this spring and will be held again this fall. Henderson is also organizing the second annual, skateboard tournament this Fourth of July. Eric Hayes will return to defend his trophy in the slalom freestyle and highjump events. This weekend the recreation department also will sponsor games on Main Street, ladies log sawing and a soapbox derby. The recreation department also sponsors eight Little League . teams combining young athletes from Park City, Kamas, Oakley, Francis and South Summit.
