Miners Lose By One The Park High cagers traveled to Altamont Tuesday. December IIS. and suffered a surprise HO-fiH overtime loss in a non-league contest. The Miners were hampered ham-pered by the loss of starting center Todd Hunter but it was poor free throw shooting and a crucial turnover in the waning seconds of the game that sent them to defeat. Hunter sprained his ankle in practice the day before the game and will be out another two weeks. His replacement. Brad Dearden. was ineffective and Park City found itself in trouble on the boards. The Miners started sluggishly and were on the short end of a 16-6 score in the late stages of the lirst quarter. A surge at the end. however, brought them to within seven. 16-9. Coach Bruce Keid went to a three-guard offense at the end of the first period, sending sen-ding Jerry Johnson in for Dearden. Johnson, who tallied 11 points on the night, hustled and scrapped and the Miners closed the gap to lour. 32-28. bv the end of the half. Park City's play improved markedly in the third quarter. quar-ter. They combined good offensive of-fensive movement, high percentage per-centage shots and touch defense to forge ahead. The Miners led by as much as six points several times in the second hall and were up by four with 25 seconds remaining in the game. Howard Davidson drove for what appeared a sure two points but the ball circumnavigated circum-navigated the hoop several times and fell out. Altamont took the rebound and their 6':5" scoring machine named Fieldsted put the ballin. bringing them within two. Fieldsted registered 38 points on the night. "Everytime I looked up he put in a bucket." Keid said. Park City came back down the court and went into a four-corner stall with only seconds left on the clock but Johnson was called lor a three-second violation. Altamont put a shot up and missed but they controlled the boards and finally volleyballed it in to send the game intoovertime at 57 all. The Miners had several opportunities to put the game away but ineptness trom the charity stripes was their undoing. They missed nine or ten free throws in the fourth period, many of them the front end of one-and-one situations. On the night, they were 2(1 for 34 from the foul line while Altamont sunk five of six attempts. Altamont jumped to a three-point lead in the overtime over-time period but Park City kept struggling back, knotting knot-ting the score several times. Although Altamont may be ihe best in Region 111. it is regarded as a weak division. "I thought the team was overconfident before this game." Keid revealed, "and I felt we were going to lose even before Hunter got hurt." Although disappointed over the loss, the coach remarked philosophically that his team had ' learned a lesson" and that the non-league non-league loss could benef it the Miners. " We had the best practice ever on Monday." Keid said. Park City will travel to Duchesne Friday for their last game before starting Region 11 competition January 6 against Tintic. It is expected that sophomore Martv Cowin will be in the starting lineup against Duchesne, filling in for Hunter. X-C Tips By Bob Kassow White Pine Ski Touring Center TIP 2. The key to good X-C technique:total w eight transfer. Total commitment to the forward or gliding ski is essential to efficient skiing that is. the transfer tran-sfer of your total body weight from one ski to the other. Thus, the power of your pole push and kick are efficiently transferred to the gliding ski. enabling the ski to slide much further than if the weight were distributed over both skis. A good way to practice this is to pick up one ski as you glide along. Do not lean from side to side to initiate the weight transfer. Move your entire body forward and over the gliding ski. health studio 1505 empire 649-7232 t STAR OF THE WEEK y II NJI V y Jim Totora in the Weeds l SktPhoto&aphy as $ Processing Special for Ski Ctobs CJ) ComVsay'rkandHave x v xSomeoiidaVCheer E NyiERhYChSTS!
