Show n Wednesday, November 9, 1977 Page 11 ! No Tricksy All Treats 'From Bach To Rock' There is a film about friendship, courage and love currently showing in Salt Lake. The theme of the film is less than unusual but it is exceptionally excep-tionally well executed, without melodrama and based on a true story. Julia is based on the reminiscences of Lilian Hellman, as chronicled in Pentimento . The story's warmth and depth owe a great deal to that woman's perception and love for humanity. The character of Julia is the hub of the story, as Lilian remembers her deep friendship with this warm and courageous woman. Julia is raised by her rich grandparents because her mother is too busy trying to straighten out her own spoiled life. Julia rebells against her staid and proper upbringing and wonders why the rich can't (won't) do anything about the poverty and misery of the working people. She decides to dedicate her life to a cause that will benefit humanity and studies medicine. But Julia's studies are interrupted by the political upheaval r of Nazism, and her convictions soon sweep her into a life of constant danger. - Lilian's admiration for Julia seems well-deserved well-deserved as their childhood acquaintances have become bored, spoiled, lazy and self-indulgent. The contrast between those cold, self-centered snobs and Julia's warmth and love is a lesson that is never lost on Lilian. Even when Lilian becomes a successful playwright, she continues to look at Julia as a source of inspiration. Julia eventually becomes embroiled in an anti-Nazi anti-Nazi underground movement and through some friends contacts Lilian to enlist her aid in smuggling money into Germany to bribe Nazi officials. of-ficials. The train ride from Paris to Germany is filled with constant suspense as Lilian is startled by every sound. But Julia knows Lilian can be forced into doing things that are beyond her level of courage, and has provided her with enough help to assure her safe passage to Berlin. The long separated friends are reunited in Berlin, and the contrasts between the now successful playwright and the Nazi fighter only underscore their deep comraderie. The acting, with Jane Fonda as Lilian and Vanessa Redgrave playing Julia, is nearly flawless. Both Fonda and Redgrave have acting personalities that compliment the warmth of the characters they portray. Redgrave, for example, exam-ple, never loses the sparkle in the eye of the ifffealisty fwhile Fonda is table' to -convincingly show the childlike wonderment and admiration Lilian has for her friend, along with the stub- borness and courage that made Lil Hellman famous. t The young actresses who portray young Julia . and Lilian (Lisa Pelikan and Susan Jones) also give fine performances in the flashback sequences.-; . To be warm without being melodramatic, to show love without involving sex, to show friendship frien-dship deeper than most love affairs these are all area where films rarely succeed, and Julia succeeds admirably. The movie's uplifting moments show how friendship provides sustenance for the human soul. ; v-'i.
