On Monday, October 31, The Newspaper went down into the water drift to witness just how water flows from the mine to the tap. Richard Martinez, who has worked for the mining company for 20 years and served on the Park City Council for 11 years, conducted the tour, explaining operations and patiently answering questions. "Anyone want a drink?" Martinez said with a chuckle as we suited up in dusty yellow slickers, overalls, rubber boots and hard hats with lanterns rounded roun-ded up by lampman Rex Davis. Monday's tour began with a visit to the Judge mine portal where the majority of Park City's water supply surfaces and flows into two 500,000-gallon reservoirs -one in Woodside Gulch south of town and one atop a hill east of the railroad tracks, clearly visible from town. A third reservoir reser-voir lies beneath the Temptation ski run and catches water from the Theriot Spring. Tour Guide Richard Martinez The city's current water storage capacity is 14 million gallons. Plans are being readied for a new. million-gallon reservoir to be located outside of the Judge tunnel. The new reservoir will have a million gallon capacity, bringing the city's storage total to 2'2 million gallons. .. "During the week," Martinez explained, ex-plained, "the million and a half gallons fill up the reservoir and the rest goes down the ditch as wasted water. The new reservoir will catch this overflow and will be a reserve to be used during the wekends when we need more water because of the heavy tourist traffic." Approximately 3,000 gallons of surplus water flows from the Spiro tunnel (beneath Thaynes) per minute. An additional ad-ditional 1,000 to 1,500 flows from the Daly West. This is drained to the Weber ' River Basin and to the Provo Water . Users' Association via Keetley and is used for irrigation purposes. Park City's supply is approximately Subscribe To The Newspaper Mr ITALIAN CUISINE an ciegant but casual atmospiere The restaurant will be closed for pre-winter cleanup until Thanksgiving week. The club will remain open every night except Monday. 2,000 gallons per minute from the Theriot and between 1,300-1,400 gallons per minute from the Judge. "The Alliance gives 200 gallons per minute," noted Martinez, "but we could add to our additional amounts by opening this caved-in drift." City Water On Its Way There are 1,100 miles of interconnected mine tunnels stretching over 1,200 acres from Keetley to Brighton. By tapping these the city's water supply "could be tripled," according to Martinez. After seeing where the water surfaced, we went below the Judge portal 1,200 feet via the Daly West hoist to see where the springs originated. During the snowy ride to the Daly West, which was heavily damaged by fire over four years ago and is no longer mined, Martinez explained what causes bath tubs to appear brownish at times and why glasses of water sometimes contain con-tain suspended particles. "This is sediment out of the reservoirs," reser-voirs," he said. "If a cave-in has occurred oc-curred in the drift and water backs up and picks up loose sticks and sediment which ordinarily settle out in the bottom of the reservoir." "If the reservoir is dry," he continued, "the water flowing in stirs up the muck which then comes into your water. " Martinez's son Rich lowered us in the hoist. (Four generations of Martinez's have worked the Park City mine. ) Water drops began to fall as we descended to the chilly 40-degree, 750-foot 750-foot level of the Daily West. "No one checked the drifts until I went on the City Council," Martinez proclaimed. "The only time we knew we had a cave-in was if there was no water." The drift is now checked every fifteen days. We walked to where the Daly joined the Judge tunnel - about 6,000 feet from the Judge portal - and walked the old, the "new old" and the new drifts. Martinez explained the problems with the old drifts, which are timbered throughout due to the instability of the ground. "These old timbers are just like sponges; they soak up water and give Famous Italian Restaurant is now open 7 days a week For Your Dining Enjoyment SERVING THE BEST ITALIAN FOOD WEST OF ITALY easily under pressure," he said. "The ground is heavy from working out the pillars of ore and the remaining rock pushes and breaks the timbers and raises hell!" As we trekkedacross planks lying on the rails above the water, Martinez pointed . out an eerie, fluffy, white substance which the old-timers called "bad air." Throughout the old drift we encountered encoun-tered signs which read: "City water. Do not contaminate. By order of the mayor" and "city drinking water. Throw carbide in cans not ditches." At certain points in the old drift we were forced to stoop low beneath seven-foot seven-foot timbers which have sunk to become four-foot timbers in the soft shale. "When we had cave-ins back in this old drift," Martinez related, "it was hard to work in these four-foot tunnels and the water source just was not reliable." Water loss was another problem. Much was leaking down through the many abandoned stopes. The new drift was begun in 1974 upon Martinez's recommendation to the City Council. 'Vle"" ,u . . .. . ' , the Zion problems in the old drift and I was1 the one who was always sent in to keep the water coming," Martinez commented. "I've been up to my knees many times in water just a shiverin' and a shakin", he' said. "If we hadn't gone in with this new drift," he added later, "we would have had no chance for the growth we've been enjoying now." The new drift lies in solid ground which requires no timbering - a bald drift - except ex-cept for eight or nine sets of timber about 1,500 feet in. Graded by lasers, it is nine feet high and has no stopes. The $170,000 drift took seven months to construct and was financed by an interest-free loan from the State Resources Board. The city pays back $30,000 of the $170,000 yearly. The water itself is provided to the city free of charge. "The mine is outside of the city limits," said City Recorder Bruce Decker, "and they pay no taxes to drive the heavy ore trucks on our roads. The City depends on the mining company and the mining company depends on the city. Our interests are intertwined and we get along well," he added. 3 GUMP AND AYERS Silver King Bank Building Phone: 649-8550 FOUR BORM TUDOR Ready for occupancy. Fantastic view. CallKay Wade, 649-8374.
