Show Page 10 Wednesday, October 19, 1977 mm in by Ja Meehan KPRQ Radio This week's column is actually about four columns that, due to lethargy, never saw print. It features an all-star cast, including: "Stuff," the "Crusaders," Charlie Byrd, the "Rolling Stones," Michael Bloomfield, Doc Watson, John Hartford, the "Dillards," and you. We'll start with you. The first of this series ( other than a November, 1973 record review for Nick Snow's Mountain Flower) appeared under the banner "Park City Music Revue" in the March 27, 1974 edition of the ill-fated Park City Coalition.? Amid the nervously over-wordy prose appeared the following statement: "Various members of the community com-munity will be contributing to this endeavor." , Two months later Steve "Lef tenant Fonso" Franzen took us inside the then relatively unknown C.T.I. X KUDO record scene, introducing in-troducing us to Grover Washington, Jr., George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrenne and Johnny Hammond along the way. Twojears later "Jellyroll" McGee gave us a look at the background of one of his "main men" Emporium Plumbing Installation and repairs. drain and sewer'lines cleaned licensed and bonded 649-8511 649-8505 h-GENERAL CONTRACTORS-H t Groves Construction P.O.Box 780 1016 ParH Ave. 649-7575 i Custom building and design, remodeling concrete work, crane rental PLUMBING MAINTENANCE ' Park City Maintenance Carpet cleanrngrwimlow washing, house cleaning, etc. Full janitorial service 649-9055,Suite 2010.M. All of you have to do is drop the "copy" by The Newspaper office and leave your name and phone number. Now on to other matters. A few months back a couple of the hottest "bands" in jazz (groups with a collective rather than individual identity) each released new albums and I realized that a review of each LP and the idiom itself I would make for an interesting column. The "Crusaders" latest is "Free as the Wind" and demonstrates once again why they are just about the biggest draw in jazz. While fusing blues, latin, R&B and boogie jazz into a cohesive whole, they very tastefully incorporate their solo virtuosity. vir-tuosity. It is, however, the highly unique texture they put into their music that sets them apart from the rest. "Stuff" is a similar congregation headquartered headquar-tered in New York, and although relatively unknown, when it comes to picking and originality, is as good as anybody. Their latest album is "More Stuff" and is on Warner Bros. (The best thing about capsulated reviews is you don't have to say anything. ) Charlie Byrd, classical and jazz guitarist extraordinaire, ex-traordinaire, dropped by the KPRQ studios a couple of weeks back for what turned out to be an interesting on-air interview. Byrd was in town for a week of concerts at the Club Blue Note Concert Con-cert Hall. The transcribed tape of the interview was to have , been another column, but yet another deadline was missed. Byrd, puffing a pipe, spoke in a low, smooth voice while recounting his years in music and the people he met along the way: Django Reinhardt, Andres Segovia (whom he studied under) Vin. cente Gomez, Stan Getz, Woody Sherman and ; . many more. . , .... .... .-i.,; Another column was to feature a review of the fantastic new "Rolling Stones" .'"'album TCbvS" You Live." The double LP. as the title suggest was recorded live in Paris and the famed El Mocambo of Toronto. It was during the latter that Keith Richards ran afoul of the folks at the Canadian drug enforcement bureau. An incident by the way which prompted many in the media to write obituaries on the Stones as a group, and "Love You Live" as their final album. , We'll just have to wait and see. - ' " - - The album is a mix of Stone's favorites like 1 "Honky Tonk Woman," "Get Off of My Cloud," "Tumbling Dice," "You Can't Always Get What You Want," "Brown Sugar," "Jumping Jack Flash," and "Sympathy For the Devil," and the blues-rock classics they played during their earlier days. The El Mocambo side is the class of the LP, proving very consoling after consecutive Dodger losses. I'm sure you can imagine how great the Stones would sound in a club. The feeling is Muddy Waters all the way as they kick it off with "Mannish Boy" followed by Ellas McDaniel's "Crackin' Up." "Bums Rush" Jagger then introduces in-troduces the band in a hilarious routine. Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster" and Chuck Berry's "Around and Around" wrap up the side. The "Rolling Stones," quite simply, are the very best rock and roll has to offer. And that is mighty good indeed. About thirty locals have front section reservations reser-vations for the upcoming Michael Bloomfield and friends concert at the Blue Note in Salt Lake. Bloomfield, who made the Gibson Les Paul guitar the rock-blues axe of the 60s, spent time with the "Paul Butterfield Blues Bank" (along with Elvin Bishop) before forming the "Electric "Elec-tric Flag" in early 1967. The "Flag's" debut was the Monterrey Pop Festival. Even Squire Jackson, owner of the Blue Note, doesn't know who is coming with him. Supposedly it has to be kept secret due to record label contracts. And finally, Doc Watson, John Hartford, the "Dillards" and Bryan Bowers (autoharpist) will appear on PBS television (Channel 7) November 8 at 8 p.m. in a special entitled "An Evening of Bluegrass." . 7 Will Rhett return to Scarlet? Tune in next week for further adventures of "Gone With the Woodwinds." - !
