Most film attempts to study the problem are heavy-handed accusations against one race or another, with few attempts to show more than one face of bigotry. Fortunately, Black and White in Color, last year's Academy Award-winning foreign film, is an attempt to show the complex components of this almost universally troubling problem. It is not, as erroneously stated in last week's column, a documentary on South Africa, but is a drama about a small outpost in French equatorial Africa during World War I . ( It's tough to get things straight when one's information in-formation comes by carrier pigeon. ) , , It's true that most of the whites in the film racists. They are also ignorant, selfish, chauvinistic, bigoted about other religions, and human. Their actions are not dictated by a Happy Birthday To You! GET RESULTS! With this viewpoint, racism becomes a bit less ugly and a little more pitiful. And, in the spirit of even handedness, the blacks have some humorous racist statements to make about their white counterparts. The humor in the film is simply charming while poignant. In one scene, the French priests try to persuade the natives to trade in their idols for Christian paraphenalia. One native balks when his large hard-carved god is only worth a small token from the priests. He insists that his work is worth at least a hand-painted Madonna. It is obvious that the natives are merely bartering bar-tering objects with the priests, who are too aloof to realize that they have not captured the hearts and minds of the natives. This same aloof priest uses logic to show a native underling why a recently arrived package belongs to him. After getting the native to concede con-cede several facts, during which he steadfastly claims the package belongs to someone else, the priest finally forces the servant to admit that the package belongs to his holiness. Naturally, the package belongs to someone else. It is this need to feel superior that cuases the whites to ignore anything the blacks say. When news of the war arrives the Frenchmen decide to attack a nearby German colony (using black soldiers, of course). The poorly organized expedition is a disaster, and the French are forced for-ced to go to the nearby village chiefs to rebuild a defense force. Through the diplomacy of a young geographer the blacks and whites unite to form an effective fighting force. The final comment on racism comes when an English Army brigade arrives to announce a truce, giving them possession of the German colony. The commander of the force, a dashing and very dark officer from India, looks at the French elite with clear distain, a lesson not totally lost upon the blacks. The film is an enjoyable "message film" that allows the viewer the luxury of many viewpoints. The heavyhandednes that clubs the viewer with an almost bigoted anti-racist message is delightfully delight-fully absent, and in its place is an enjoyable picture pic-ture that shows racism as the stupid folly that it is.
