Show 1 Page 12 Wednesday, September 21, 1977 V mm Linda Ronstadt and Special Events Center and the Dirt Band (Nitty Gritty ) and the Oak Ridge Boys at the State Fair. Not too shabby, indeed. The new Bernie Leadon-Michael Geogiades Band opened the Ronstadt show with a set comprised com-prised mostly of laid back and jazzy country rock. Leadon, besides being a founding member of the Eagles, has stints with both Dillard and Clark and the Burritto Brothers behind him, and if this past Wednesday is any indication, he has only just begun. Georgiades has performed with a variety of west coast acts including Johnny Rivers. His vocals and composition talents seem to jell rather well with Leadon's, but you can't tell a whole lot from a 40-minute opening set. The most interesting thing about their portion of the show were two traditional tunes that came at the end of the set. The crowd up to this point had not, on the whole, paid much attention to the L-G Band, but once Bernie put down his electric guitar, grabbed his accoustic-with-pick-up, and began flatpicking some old fiddle tunes, those in attendance flat got down to it. Next he shucked the guitar for a 5-string banjo and treated the now faithful to an impeccable version of "Footprints "Foot-prints In The Snow." As is oftentimes the case, now that there was an inter-relationship between the band and audience, the group's time had expired. ex-pired. Keep them in mind: The Bernie Leadon-Michael Leadon-Michael Georgiades Band. The Ronstadt road band was made up of longtime friend and ex-Stone Pony-ite Kenny Edwards on bass; "Waddy" Wachtel. guitars; Dan Dugmore, guitars and pedal steel;, Don Grolnick, pianos and organ; and Rick Mai'otta, drums. With the band in place "Lovely Linda" made her appearance bedecked in a Cub Scout uniform complete with scarf and "short -shorts" and immediately broke into the Karla Bonoff penned ''Lose Again" from the "Hasten Down the Wind" LP. She sounded and looked exceedingly ex-ceedingly good. The rest of the set followed in a flurry. One gem on top of another. Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day," "Blue Bayou" from her brand new "Simple Dreams" album, "Silver Threads and Golden Needles," Lowell Georges great roper- by Jay Meehan KPRQ Radio Bernie Leadon at the Anymore," and "When Will I Be Loved." the Phil Everly tune Linda had out about three years ago. What control she had, this barefoot-contessa barefoot-contessa of rock-country-torch-blues. Her Patsy Cline tribute, Willie Nelson's "Crazy" featured a beautifully tender interplay between Ronstadt and pianist Grolnick. The crowd loved it. "Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me," John David Souther's "Simple Man, Simple Dream," and the Jagger-Richards Rolling Stone "Tumbline Dice," all three from the latest LP, were also included. After "Desperado" and Elvis' "Love Me Tender" Ten-der" I quit taking notes (mental and otherwise), slipped into a dream-like state, and went to the front of the stage. All I remember is that the final encore was "Heat W7ave." What a lady! The following evening was the State Fair. The Oak Ridge Boys opened the grandstand show, providing some good-time, hand clapping gospel-rock, gospel-rock, and leading the large crowd in a sing-along of "The U'all Come Back Saloon," their current hit record. The Dirt Band was the featured act and opened things up with their quasi-therrie. MAael Murphy's Mur-phy's "Cosmic Cowboy" (known locally as Vance Van-ce Goo's song ) . The set was short, as they do. two shows, so we only got a sprinkling of their many fine tunes : The cajun flavored "Bayou Jubilee,". Jerry Jeff's "Mr. Bojangles." the traditional "Way Downtown," "Orange Blossom Special," and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken." during which they were joined by the Oak Ridge Boys for a great encore. Another Dirt Band era is now underway, this one having John McEuen, Jimmie Fadden, and Jeff Hanna as the ongoing "band-' with other musicians being peripheral to their musical scene. Brian Carter and I discovered this backstage, when, not bom.: able to interview ' McEuen who was surrounded by relatives,-we cornered Fadden. "The tour of the Soviet Union was a gas," Fadden Fad-den informed us, "but when we got back John Cable and Jackie Clark left the group 'for a variety of reasons." And now they are three. But the original three. Still very much the great ."Nitty Gritty Dirt " Band." I can't remember the names of the drummer doper truckin' song "Willing," "Faithless - and bass man, but one could sure tell that. they. .
