Show X Page 10 Wednesday, July 6, 1 977 Every person who reviews films must recognize that the cinema is the most expensive art form ever invented by man. This alone is responsible for more movie atrocities than any other single factor, including lunacy, depravity, and sheer stupidity. Film artists must work hand in hand with accountants and bankers, a yin yang relationship that probably does neither of them much good. Thus, following Jaws phenominal success, it was only natural that Peter Benchly would be given another chance to work miracles upon the pocketbooks of American movie goers. The Deep resulted, and will probably please very few people, least of all the film critics. This is mainly because The Deep is a formula film that is blatently counting upon reviving Jaws mania, but lacks the finesse and artistry to stand alone. It is Lloyd Bridges with sex and death added. It is an ad campaign specifically designed to fire a neuron deep within America's memory bank. It is scary music and suspenseful editing. It is also a bunch of investors who react to the smell of money with the same frenzy as sharks react to the smell of blood. Benchly wrote everything into the script, sharks, heroin, sunken treasure, and of course, the terror of the deep (plus a happy ending) . Why not a Busby Berkley dance scene incorporating starfish? The Deep only lacks a porpoise! The ending of the film shows that someone read the textbook on suspense in the cinema. In probably the most exciting (and only) underwater fight sequences since James Bond movies became passe, the good guys (in white skin) battle the bad guys (in the black skin) while the world's longest two minute fuse sputters ominously. Guess who wins. In the cinema there are times when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. What causes this effect could be debated endlessly. While there are people who will argue that Jaws is indeed a fine example of this axiom, it is doubtful that anyone will accord the same respect to The Deep. When the investors wonder why, tell them it's magic. - Subscribe! fix Istannual V2 11 Going Away Party 1 jl for Kran 1 g at ilie Silveir KintfCIub s I jf Rock n' Roll Band j Thurs. Ms. Vinnie Fish, the new proprietor, is in the process of relocating both her family and studio from her present Salt Lake location. She says of her shift, "I think there are many wonderful things going on in Park City and there are lots of good photographers. I think there's plenty to keep us all busy." In addition to operating her Salt Lake studio, Ms. Fish has done the photographic work for the Ballet West for the past two years. She has received a grant to continue her photographing for the ballet and will further her work with the group as well as do free lance photographing while operating her Resort center shop. Starting out originally as a painter, Ms. Fish says she "fell into photography by chance." She has exhibited and worked in New York City in addition to having worked for two news agencies, her latest photographic assignment being the Gary Gilmore dilemma. Color processing, however, will be sent away for speedy development. Her shop will sell film and a limited variety of cameras. Ms. Fish plans on doing a lot of mountain shots this year. "I'm a decent enough skier to do a lot of ski shots," she explains "and I will be talking to the Resort about what they want me to do for them." She added that she would also be doing color portraits. The shop, which is currently open for business, has hours which basically coincide with the gondola schedule: from 11-5 or 6 in the summer and from 9-4 in the winter, with closing hours extending with demand. Ms. Fish invites people to express their photographic needs and promises to do everything possible to meet them. by Greer Markle -r At i V 'fi WESTERN WALLFLOWER Planning Commission Agenda PLANNING COMMISSION WORK SESSION July 13, 1977 1. 7 p.m. - Discussion Session - Subdivision Ordinance and Deer Valley Report. 2. 8 p.m. - Deer Valley Resort Proposal -Review and approval of Planning Commission's final report on project. 3. 8:30 p.m. - Norfolk Subdivision - Additional consideration of preliminary plat. 4. 8:30 p.m. - Park Meadows No. 5 - Final Subdivision Plat 5. 8:40 p.m. - Thaynes Canyon No. 3 -Preliminary plan 6. 9:15 p.m. - 10 Acre Saddle Planned Unit Development - This development will involve 17 building sites and is located atop the hill immediately south and overlooking Holiday Ranch. 7. 9:30 p.m. - Zone change on the corner of U.S. Highways 224 and 248 adjacent to car wash. 8. 9:45 - Ski lift - originating from Coalition Building. 9. 10:15 p.m. - Alpine Slide - Formal application. 10. 10:20 p.m. - Discussion concerning the replacement window in the Alamo. 11. 10:30 p.m. - Conditional use application for Glieden Karlynn - a women's apparel shop to be located in the Mt. Erysimum asperum The bright yellow blossoms of the Western Wallflower are common throughout the Rocky Mountain region. The plants vary in height from 6 to 30 inches and have flowers '4 to '2 an inch wide. The four petals of the blossom form a cross-like appearance, hence the scientific family name Cruciferae. The Wallflower's name is derived from its preference for growing in old walls or among rocks. In this area the Wallflower blooms from June to August. It is a perennial plant and is easily cultivated.
