Sidon Fighting erupted on three fronts Monday in southern Lebanon and rightist troops appeared ready for a major attack against a leftist-Palestinian stronghold near the Israeli border. Travelers arriving from the combat zones said two people were killed and eight injured when opposing forces exchanged artillery fire near the village of Yarin. The fighting spread to the rightistrheld village of Alma al-Shaab, severing the east-west road from the seaside settlement of Naquora to the leftist stronghold of Bint Jbeil. Moscow President Carter's decision to push development of the Cruise missile was attacked by the Soviet Union Sunday. The Communist party newspaper Pravda said the move has opened a new round in the "dangerous. arms race" and accused the United States of attempting to delay a new strategic arms limitation agreement. Beirut, Lebanon An oil price split that has plagued the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries for the past half year was ended Sunday when Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates announced a five percent increase. The split occurred when 11 OPEC nations raised the price of their crude oil by ten percent on Jan. 1, promising another five percent increase on July V. Saudi" Arabia and UAE, at that time, agreed toraise., theii prices by only five percent with no commitment to future increases. Sunday's increase by the two holdouts coupled with an announcement Wednesday by nine OPEC members that the July 1 price hike has been cancelled, puts all OPEC nations, except Libya and Iraq, at the same 1977 price level. Illinois Ankara, Turkey Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit resigned Sunday after his ten-day-old center-left government was defeated on its first vote of confidence in parliament. Ecevit submitted his resignation less than a month after his Republican People's party won national elections. His defeat could open the door to a return of right-wing coalition rule under former Premier Suleyman Demirel. Observers feel Turkish rule under a right-wing coalition could aggravate such problems as the Cyprus deadlock and strained relations with the United States. Econe, Switzerland Monsignor Marcel Leb-ebvre, Leb-ebvre, former archbishop of Dakar, ordained 14 young priests at his seminary last Wednesday against the expressed orders of Pope Paul VI. ' ' NATIONAL New York A gunman hijacked a bus Monday, ordered it onto a Kennedy Airport runway and demanded $6 million and air transport out of the country as ransom for his hostages aboard the bus. A woman passenger and the bus driver were killed by the hijacker, described as "racially upset," and a third person was wounded before the bus was cornered near a hangar. Later, another man was shot, apparently while trying to escape from the bus, and was picked up by an ambulance. Police estimate there were 22 persons aboard when the hijacking occurred in midafternoon. With nine released and two dead, nine persons were believed to be on the bus as of Monday. The wounded bus passenger, John Mc.Gavenr, said of the hijacker (descBibed. as a. Sp'arifsf-speaking Sp'arifsf-speaking black), "He was racially upset, very upset about the racial situation. I'm sure he's insane." Chambersburg, Pa. Gary Rock, a 23-year-old ex-Marine,' was shot and captured in an apple orchard after two sniper killings and was arraigned on two counts of criminal homocide Sunday. Rock was hospitalized after being shot by police Saturday night as he held a rifle to his head and threatened to kill himself .The accused killer attempted suicide Monday by slashing his wrists and neck with broken glass but was quickly discovered byprison guards and was reported in good condition. A fire in Rock's cabin Saturday brought the town fire department and area residents to the scene but as they approached the fire chief and a resident were shot dead and another fireman was wounded. Sarasota, Fla. A 15-year-old choir girl escaped from her kidnapper Friday after spending three days tied naked to a bedpost being bruised and sexually molested. Charlotte Grosse managed to loosen her bonds while her captor, Wilfred Bannister, was out of his $61,000 house buying gasoline for his sports car. She called her father who told her to get out a window. The teenager was dragged from a tent at a remote Girl Scout campsite 12 miles from Sarasota before dawn Wednesday. Washington In a surprise move, President Carter Thursday ordered a halt to the Bl bomber program but called for the deployment of Cruise missiles which can be launched from the air. Carter cited faith in the Cruise missile, continued effectiveness of the B52 bomber and the expense of the Bl as reasons for abandoning the most costly airplane ever. Although the House has appropriated $1.5 billion to build five Bl's the Senate Democratic leadership is expected to support Carter's stand. Washington The U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday banned use of the death penalty for the crime of rape and suggested that capital punishment may not be legal for any crime other than murder. By a 7-2 vote, the court ruled that the death penalty imposed on condemned Georgia rapist could not be carried out and a majority of six justices ruled that rape may never be punished by death. Had the court decided that states can use the. death sentence for crimes in which the victim's life is not taken it could have set a precedent for other non-fatal crimes such as treason, hijacking and kidnapping. middle school for younger children, a number of small children will be traveling to and from school along Park Avenue. Park City Manager Wayne Matthews is being considered for appointment to the Utah State Board of Health. Matthews was interviewed by the State Senate last Wednesday night and a decision on the board member appointments is expected to come on July 12 when the Senate reconvenes. Matthews said he was recommended to Utah Governor Scott Matheson by a person or persons unknown to him. The governor, in turn, submitted the city manager's name to the Senate for consideration. Work Begins On New Well North Of Town Park City Manager Wayne Matthews reported Friday that work has begun on the Pacific Bridge water well located in the Prospector Square area at the north end of town. Workers began Thursday to prepare the 456-foot-deep well for city use. Improvements will include installation of a pump, the sealing of the casing for 100 feet and connection of the well to the city's water distribution system. When brought on line, the well is expected to pump 280 gallons per minute. , "That should take care of all of Prospector Square, the Holiday Ranch and Park Meadows," Matthews said. "At least, that's what we're planning on."
