Show Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1976 STAY Page 9 IKS. WbrtdCup 77 Debut at S. V. I with Craig Altschul S By Peter Najar Wolfe's Repair Shop j In writing this, I am assuming that we will be skiing eg by the time this article finds its way into the paper pgfooops! ). At this time of year the slopes have a fair , g amount of rocks on them. Rocks and skis don't quite get along. As a result, skis have a tendency to take a jybeating. The damage is oftentimes repaired with a jp simple P-tex base patch. v The art of base patching is an easy one to learn. Only a few tools are required: a Stanley Surform and I ia P-tex candle matching the color of the skis. The P-tex candle is.like a welder's torch: it supplies the P heat to weld the new P-tex material to the damaged sSarea 3 The area to be repaired must be free of dirt and gswax. To remove wax, a wax remover or lacquer t thinner may be used. Make sure you let the thinner sgdry completely: its quite flameable. Pick out any sf debris left in the ski, i.e., rocks and dirt, and cut g away any loose fibers of base that may be in the 3 gouge. Those of you that have used colored P-tex have noticed black spotches on the burning candle or on the patched area. To prevent discoloration, light the candle by holding a match far enough below the P-tex candle so that the flame does not touch the : candle. Once it is lit, hold the candle so that it almost touches the area to be repaired. The idea is to maintain a flame that is as blue as possible, that is, a flame giving off almost no yellow. A deep gouge must be filled in layers. Each layer must be allowed to cool completely before the next layer is applied. If too much P-tex is dripped into one area, it will overheat the area and begin to boil. The bubbles of P-tex will prevent the bond from attaining maximum strength. With all the gouges filled, remove the excess with a Stanley Surform. The Surform will 'cut 'the excess . Next to the last downhill in the 76-77 World Cup series, the Harriman downhill and giant slalom races, (for men . and women), will be held on the Warm Springs side of Baldy Mountain. Race course for the downhill, already has been ranked by Hank Tauber, Alpine Team Director as, "one of the most modern in the world." Men's downhill course i begins at an elevation of 9,020 feet on the top of Baldy. The course will demand constant high speeds to the finish, a vertical drop of 3,022 feet. Actual ski distance will be nearly two miles with speeds downhill competitors will be tested on a course 6,416 feet in length which starts at an elevation of $100 feet and finishes at 5998 feet, Have you noticed all the new gimmicks the resorts are using to "get us" this season? Fourteen countries and want people to think you skied like me. There are other marketing possibilities too. I remember John David Rose, one of the ski world's more ingenious marketing types, hopping into a. Mount Snow gondolawith me one day a few winters back. "What an idea I have, Tips, old buddy," he said. I waited. "Let's put a coumpter by the gondola station and sell lift tickets by the ride " "Huh?" I asked, rememberiipt our industry is so technologically bankrupt it took 40 years to discover boots could be semi-comfortable. "Seriously," he laughed. Dave does that. "We'll give a skier a card worth, say. 12 lift rides on a given Saturday. If the all-day regular lift ticket is $12 and the skier gets 12 rides, that's a buck a ride. If he or she gets in only six rides because of the crowds, the skier simply would stop by the cashier's window at the end of the day, turn in the lift pass and get a $6 refund. What you get is what you pay for. Like it?" I once again considered the possibilities. The lift operator could become a technician. Just as we got to the gondola, he could hand us a printout to read on the way up. . , : "Hello, skier," it would read. "We have computed series, ouu Snow Summit.
