Park City's Ranagad Desperados Photo: Patrick McDowell First of all, an apology to any music fan who may ' have missed the Ray Charles concert due to the erroneous information in last week's column. Now, on to the business at hand. About 75 renegade . desperados from Park City (and a few from Heber City, Kamas, Wanship, and Woodland) attended the opening show of the touring Outlaw Music Festival ' at the Salt Palace last Wednesday evening. Actually, '' attended is too polite a term. "Participated joyfully , in"probably comes closer to the actual happening. They traveled by car, foot, thumb and two buses, . having previously prepared (in some cases possibly over prepared) their individual psyches at the Utah ' Coal and Lumber Bar's pre-party. They re-united in front of the Salt Palace for what must have resembled the senior class picture for the Johnny Mack Brown School for the Wayward Galoot. The wagons were then disbanded, to re-circle up-front Jessi Colter was accompanied by the Waylors and and stage center r awaiting apprehensively tfiel tier-set was the most surprising. ; Her soulful ' assembled in one town (with the possible exception of the "OK Corral" incident in Tombstone, Arizona or the 72 Republican gathering in Miami.) The entertainment got under way with the surprising appearance of young country picker-poet Steve Young who, although with a relatively, new band, provided an example of the good talent residing below the superstar surface of "outlaw music", .y i Tompall Glaser followed with his blues-oriented brand of C&W, but problems with the brand new sound system detracted from his set. Tompall's group is also new and as Nancy Tripp commented after the show: "Individually, they were great, pickers, but they just didn't come together as a group." arrival of the largest collection of outlaws ever Fri. &Sat. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. JF The total hair care salon We Do The NOVA REDKEN SKIN & HAIR CARE PRODUCTS Jerry Frkovich (owner) "PUT OUR HANDS IN YOUR HAIR" 649-9501 444 Main piano-vocals and full smile immediately won over uie auuiciitc, even 1 nit nidiiiidii, wnu untc uieu iu . Then it was Willie Nelson's turn with Salt Palace time limitations cutting short his usual 1M hour set to about 45 minutes. Seeing the "Right Reverend" in person even for that short time was worth it for all of the "true believers" in attendance. He combined medleys of his older standards with some of his more recent compositions; providing the final encore by leading the audience in a resounding version of the Leadbells classic Goodnight Irene. The concert as a whole was a community event which no doubt will make its way into the historical folklore of Park City A reminder to all traditional music fans in town: Saratoga's 2nd Annual Bluegrass Banjo and Fiddle Contest will take place Labor Day Weekend near Lehi, Utah, on Utah Lake. But of all his films, Face to Face must rank as one of the heaviest dramas he has directed. Fortunately, Bergman is not a sadist, and provides an equally uplifting denouement. Face to Face observes ; the destruction of a woman's normally organized personality. Signifi-cahtly; Signifi-cahtly; the woman is a psychiatrist who is respected for her Strength and consistency. But all the knowledge accumulated in her study of the human mind is not an adequate defense against the demons the subconcious is capable of unleashing. In one sense, Bergman's psychiatrist is made more vulnerable by her knowledge; she feels she is capable of handling her problem herself. No one could find a better way to expose the frailty of the human mind than to show a person, dedicated to healing mental illness, unable to stop her own destruction. The analyst is portrayed as a woman who is competent, detatched, and slightly cold. An attempted rape seems not to bother her in the least. But the incident broke her defenses, and long repressed feelings of inadequacy and guilt seized control of her mind. Finally, the audience comes to realize the analyst is compulsive, dislikes or fears her patients, and most important, is very lonely. Liv Ullman, who played the analyst, can only be considered superb. The agony of the tortured soul she portrayed is emotionally draining for the audience. Ullman's acting presence seems uncanny, slipping from the strong-willed woman into the abyss of the unconscious, then back to the woman in control of herself with such realism that no one is left unaffected. Unfortunately, the dialogue in the film was not quite as powerful as it should have been. This can be attributed to the fact that the film, was dubbed into English. (The presidential candidate who promises to outlaw dubbed films has my vote.) Then, after wrenching one's emotions, Bergman creates a scene that, after witnessing the almost total mental destruction of a human being, could only be described as the rising of a Phoenix. Hence, Face to Face becomes not a pessimistic study of weakness, but a reaffirmation of the resiliency of the soul.
