As new head coach Steve Leatham puts if, "Everybody is expect ing a lot out of these guys." 1 Despite an early setback against Altamont in a practice game last week, the Miners have just cause for entering the upcoming season with a healthy dose of optimism. With talented veterans at the key positions, the Red and White should be capable of putting it all together on a given afternoon Coach Leatham, a Park High graduate and a former all-state quarterback, described junior Cory Provost "as the heart of this year's team." Joining the two in the backfield is the hard running Cliff Martinez and the sure-handed sure-handed flanker Brad Goff. Opening up the holes for the Miner backfield will be seven senior stalwarts. At the guards, scrappy Dennis Arko is matched with Mark Jolly. Mean Mike Reed and Jim Farley should offer strong support at the tackle positions,' while ends Scott Toly and Chuck Berriochoa bring seasoning and size to the vetern group. Tim Polychronis, returning to his center position, rounds out the offensive line. . The Park High defense, led by Arko and Reed at the tackles and buttressed by' linebackers. Martinez and Henrion, will reek havoc on opposing ball carriers. The Mighty Miners' next game will be at home, Friday, Sept.ll, when they do battle against the Intermountain Indians. The Miners started well but in the end, were shutout by Altomont's two touchsdowns and the final score was Altamont 12, Park City 0. The game was a hard hitting, penalty laiden one, with the majority of the infractions) walked off against Park City. On - the first play from scrimmage the Miners sacked the Longhorns' quarterback and on the second play Altamont gained only two yards. Altamont finally got their first quarter offense going on a 90-yard drive that ended on a 4-yard plunge for a touchdown. The extra point was missed.' During the second quarter, Dennis Arko intercepted an Altamont pass and returned it 18 yards to the Longhorn 7-yard-line. After a series of penalties and advances, the Miners had the ball on the 3, but couldn't get it past the goal line and were forced to turn it over. V End Scott Toley Hunt completed a 20-yard pass and advanced to the 17 -yard-line, before being stopped again. -Par's City blocked a punt in the third quarter and then found themselves on the Longhorn 11-yard-line. From there, Cory Provost ran it in for a touchdown but a penalty brought it back. After another series of penalties, discussions and arguments, (many involving in-volving the fans), the Miners still had not scored and were forced to punt. Later in the third quarter another argument broke out over the time clock. This time the referee wouldn't take it : anymore and told the fans to be seated in the stands or play would not resume. The fans cooperated and play did resume. During the fourth quarter, the Longhorns capitalized on a Miner fumble and scored from 20 yards out for their last -touchdown. Again, the extra point was missed. The Miners tried desperately to score in the waning moments but time ran out. Park City's next football game will be Friday, Sept. 11, at home, against the Intermountain Inter-mountain Indians. ft - " ft m fiii . .
